As the Community, Culture and Safety Tax for Capital Improvements passed overwhelmingly for its extension earlier this month, city projects and local nonprofits alike were given a boost of sales tax capital to enhance Boulder’s amenities and services.
Community Cycles, Boulder’s largest bicycle advocacy group, was one of the nonprofit organizations chosen to receive a portion of the $42 million expected to be raised in sales tax revenue over the next four years.
Boulder bike enthusiasts rejoiced, as the extra funding will help the organization move to a larger, permanent and better-equipped facility in the convenient reaches of the redeveloping Boulder Junction on 30th and Pearl Parkway.
“We’re teaching all sorts of classes, workshops and vocational training programs. Having this new space will allow us a classroom space, an education center, as well as an open shop center,” said Sue Prant, the executive director of Community Cycles.
As part of the tax renewal ballot measure, every dollar of the $822,500 awarded must be matched through private donations and funding.
Of the 13 beneficiaries of the Capital Improvement Tax, six are city-based improvement projects and seven are local nonprofit projects, including Community Cycles — each to receive a different sum. About 20 percent of the tax, accumulated over four years, will be distributed to the nonprofit groups.
The community groups were chosen based upon City Council public hearings this past summer.
