Betasso. It’s no different than your teeth, the junk drawer in the kitchen, your body or your drawer full of worn out Lycra. Sooner or later it needs to get cleaned out. So that you can see the forest for the trees and all that. Betasso is my second home. I’ve gone there to lose the baby weight. Three times. I’ve gone there to mourn my parent’s death. Twice. And I’ve gone there to remind myself of both my strengths and my weaknesses. It’s always there and although it’s going to be a hard close for those of us who love it – the turkeys, the deer, the off camber turns and the tight two-way trails that are served best with a side of bike bell – it needs some love and self-protection right now. Read more about how Betasso will be closed Monday-Friday starting later this month. You can follow the Betasso ranger for more updates @rangerfowler.
From the Times Call
The 1,181-acre Betasso Preserve will be closed on a schedule of Monday through Friday starting Oct. 24, as the Boulder County Parks and Open Space department launches a major hazardous fuels reduction — tree thinning -— project.
The grants funding the project require that it be completed by March 31, but it should be wrapped up much sooner than that.
“We’re hoping we can be done before the holidays,” said Stefan Reinold, senior forestry resource specialist for Parks and Open Space. “We hope to be done by Christmas.
“It’s contingent upon weather. If the helicopter can’t fly, they’re not going to be able to work. We’re hoping we can have this knocked out fairly quickly.”
