‘Pink Ride’ through Longmont to honor cyclists struck and killed in Boulder County

Cyclists in pink will pedal through Longmont on Wednesday evening in an honorary parade for three bicyclists recently struck and killed in Boulder County.

The police-escorted “Pink Ride” will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Roosevelt Park, 700 Longs Peak Ave., and loop about 7.5 miles around Longmont, along streets where two of the cyclists were hit by vehicles.

Peyton Knowlton, 8, of Longmont, was struck and killed riding her bike home from school May 20 at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Alpine Street in Longmont.

Shane Swope, 46, of Longmont was struck and killed June 21 at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Gay Street in Longmont.

No charges have been filed in the Longmont crashes.

William Davis, 35, of Boulder was killed in a hit-and-run crash June 25 at 30th Street and Jay Road in Boulder County. The driver was later arrested.

The three were avid cyclists and loved riding, according to friends and family.

Riders are encouraged to wear pink — Peyton’s favorite color.

Bicycle Longmont President Byron Thomas said he expects upwards of 200 people to attend the ride.

Ryan Kragerud, former president, thanked the Longmont City Council Tuesday evening for expediting a parade permit for the event. He told the council the organization had not held such an event in his memory.

Event organizers have requested anyone with friends or family injured by vehicles while on their bicycles submit names to be read before the ride.
