Tri Hearter: Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon

For me, the Loveland Lake to Lake triathlon reminds me of the mail in that it’s rare and super cool to still get personal mail. Stay with me on this…
Bill L2LRemember when we actually received personal cards and letters in the mail? Maybe it still happens, but remember when people would go to extreme lengths to get cards mailed to their sweet hearts with a Loveland postmark for Valentine’s Day??? Maybe I’m just too old, or romantic or clearly a native who remembers these things, but I can’t help but think of that when I think of Loveland.
But the thought of the Loveland Lake to Lake triathlon, for me, is nostalgic and reminds me of simpler times. I had a very successful race here in 2012. It was my first ever age group win so of course I have good memories. But more, this triathlon, in its 16th year embodies something more. It’s a bit of a destination for many triathletes from the front range and as such has that road trip feel. Looking back at the results I see so many names from the 2012 field who have become friends of mine since. I was pretty new to triathlons then and I’m really excited to race this year knowing I will see lots of familiar athletes. People love to come back to Loveland.
Racers and families enjoy the venue from a shaded park in the heart of town centered on beautiful Lake Loveland–like it’s a picnic but wait, it’s a race! It just feels folksy but organized, small but with 800 competitors it’s not. For so many used to racing at Boulder reservoir, this race rejuvenates and delivers a different experience. 40% of this year’s field will be first timers. There is a lot going on at this race for everyone.
Peggy Shockley, race director, has worked hard to make this race both competitive and inviting for new triathletes. This year the race is the official USAT Club and Family Championship race, details here . Peggy says, “It will mostly be competition with Colorado clubs, I contacted all the clubs in the region I could find, but it seems to turn into competition between clubs in whatever state the championship is held. However, Columbia MO is coming and bringing about 40 athletes–it will be good!”
Jamie Wheeler of Ft. Collins who recently moved to the state will be racing for the first time in a few years and is excited to race close to home and experience “Colorado racing”. As a former resident of San Diego, another huge hub of triathlon, she is excited to witness first hand the level of competition here. She adds, “it’s been a while and it will be interesting to see where I’m at. I’ve been moving all week and twisted my ankle carrying a box so I’m not sure what to expect. I’m looking forward to only thinking about racing and this seems like the perfect race to leave the stress of moving behind–if for only a few hours”. Jamie will be offering a post race story on her thoughts on this race.
To add to the fun, Peggy is inviting people to send a picture with a sign you print from their website as to why you love the race. Take a picture and post on the Lake to Lake Facebook page to win a prize. Link here.
