News Item:

The defending champion of the Firecracker 50 for the past two years, Heather Irmiger, will be doing this years race with a race partner, her mother. Heather had not originally planned on racing the Firecracker 50 given a race scheduling conflict as she is up in Canada today racing the Mont Saint Anne World Cup tomorrow. Her mother had signed up to do it this year with a friend but that person bailed out leaving Heather to fill the spot. In Heather's words, "I saw how hard my mom had been working to do this, so decided to help her make it happen". They will be in the "Maverick" category with Heather taking the first lap leaving Mom to clean up after her daughter (bet she has been there before). Heather has won this event for last 2 years

We asked Heather to tell us a little bit about this up coming opportunity.

Start order for Cross Nats Determined by Revamped Rider Ranking

Call-ups for non-UCI catetories at Cyclo-cross Nationals will be determined by rider ranking in USA Cycling's re-vamped Results and Ranking System, increasing the importance of results submission for local race directors. Start order for all non-UCI categories at the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships will be determined by rider ranking using the organization’s new, improved rankings system to debut Sept.1.

Cyclo-cross will be the first USA Cycling National Championship to use the remodeled rankings system to resolve call-up order for all race divisions other than Collegiate, Junior 17-18 and Elite. Following member feedback, this method of seeding aims to offer the most equitable and concise call-up procedure possible and does signify a departure from the previous approach of utilizing time trials, random drawings or based on when a rider registered online for Cyclo-cross National Championships.

Open Forum - Why are so many getting hurt at Valmont Bike Park?

News Item:

Valmont Bike Park is for many different types of cyclist, this came apparent the first time I arrived there. There are some great features for kids, families and features for those who oppose gravity. Some of the park was not for me, but I'm not complaining, it is so great to see so many out on bikes, regardless of their reason for arriving. What did concern me was the apparent lack of personal risk management.

Fatal car-bicycle accident closes Lefthand Canyon Drive

Looks like Christopher Loven has had issues with cyclists before. Here is an article form June of 2009:

BOULDER, Colo. — A Boulder County man accused of accosting a bicyclist in a weekend road-rage incident has been ticketed on suspicion of reckless endangerment.

The ticket, a class-three misdemeanor, alleges that Chris Loven created a “substantial risk of bodily injury to another person” by nearly forcing a cyclist into oncoming traffic. The charge is punishable by fines ranging from $50 to $750, and a maximum of six months in jail.

The incident that led to the ticket happened about 6 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Lee Hill Drive and Olde Stage Road. Loven said he came upon a cyclist in the middle of the road who refused to move over and then punched his truck after a verbal confrontation.

The cyclist claims Loven was driving aggressively. Sheriff’s officials said a witness to the incident claimed Loven, not the cyclist, was the aggressor.

Loven, 43, will appear in a Boulder courtroom late next month. On Wednesday, he said he plans to fight the charge.
