The Buffalo Bicycle Classic, Why it Matters, and Why Ride It.

There are many reasons to choose to try the Buffalo Bicycle Classic on September 8th. For one, with distances of 14, 35, 50, 70, 75, and 100 miles, there is a distance for all. The 70 mile course stays on the flatter roads of Boulder County whereas the 75 mile is a mountain loop up Boulder Canyon gaining some 6,000 feet. The Century adds an out and back to Estes Park before heading down St. Vrain Canyon to Lyons.

Its rare to ride Boulder Canyon closed, which it is for those heading up the mountain on the 75 and 100 mile options. This is a great opportunity to ride this beautiful road with full support.

The Buffalo Bicycle Classic dates back to 2003, having raised over 3.9 million dollars in support of student scholarships at CU Boulder. The students served by the BBC are some of Colorado’s brightest; each entering CU with over a 4.0 high school GPA. Our student scholars also demonstrate strong financial need, which makes this scholarship particularly important. Our $10,000 scholarship to these promising students makes higher education attainable. Through the generous support of our sponsors, volunteers and riders, we are able to make a difference in the lives of over 400 students in the last fourteen years.

The success of the BBC is in part due to lessons learned from the Bolder Bike Classic, a ride of the late 1990’s developed by Cliff Bosley under the Bolder Boulder umbrella of events. The event has grown over the years, not only in the dollars raised, or scholarships awarded, but also in the course itself. The BBC now offers 8 cycling courses, varying in difficulty including a gravel route new for 2019. No matter your age, experience, or physical ability, we have a route for you! Enjoy the beautiful vistas Boulder has to offer, stop by one of our delicious aid stations, or climb Boulder Canyon in confidence thanks to the westbound lane closure. Whatever way you look at it, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic is a great event for a great cause.

Nicole Marie Sanders, a scholarship recipient says, “Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to afford school and pursue my dreams; their help means more than I can explain. When I graduate, I wish to keep helping the organization, even through a small donation, so they can continue to support deserving and needing students just like me.”

I just wish the entry was cheaper. I was thinking of riding this with my girlfriend, whom is not a big time cyclist, on the 35 mile route and the cost is still just under $100.
