Longmont Tri ending after 33 years; city blames competition

longmont-tri_0-1According to an article in the Longmont Times-Call this morning, the long-standing Longmont sprint triathlon has been cancelled by city officials.
“With a growing number of races in the area — including three triathlons at Union Reservoir — the possibility of dropping the city-backed event has been raised more than once in the past few years. . . Even just within Longmont, last year saw the Summer Open Sprint Triathlon in May, the Outdoor Divas All Women’s Triathlon in August and the Oktoberfest Sprint Triathlon in September, all at Union. This year, a fourth event — an Ironman in Boulder — is holding its sprint distance race on the same day Longmont would have had its event.”
Long-time organizer Karen Charles says If an independent group were to revive the event or something like it, she would be more than willing to lend her expertise.

303Triathlon reached out to race directors Dave Christen, of the Boulder Tri Series, and Lance Panigutti, of Without Limits to hear their comments on the subject.
Dave Christen replied, “I am sure Lance and I share the same sentiment that we are both sad to hear such a historic and traditional race close up its run. With so many alternatives available, even non-triathlon options, we all have a hard time balancing out the regional calendar. We hope the city and organizers reconsider and try to make it work. It is such a great entry-type race to the sport, and we never like to see those options go away.”
