A Fixie on Route 66 for Kids on Bikes

If you follow ultra-endurance cycling, you may have heard of “Fixie” Dave Nice, perhaps best known for a successful completion of the Tour Divide on a fixed gear bicycle in 2012 (and a handful of not-so-fruitful attempts!) The Tour Divide is over 2700 miles of riding along the Continental Divide from Banff, Canada to Antelope Wells, NM, with around 200,000ft of vertical gain. Not an easy ride for any bike, and extremely extra challenging on a fixed gear bike.

Dave was ready for a new adventure, and this year he decided to tackle the inaugural Route 66 Race. It started October 1, and he’s now working his way the 2500 miles from Chicago to the Santa Monica pier. And of course he’s out there on a fixed gear bike.

He’s not just riding, but rather dedicating his ride to raise money for the Colorado Springs non-profit, Kids on Bikes. The mission of Kids on Bikes is to inspire and empower all kids to lead healthy, active, and happy lives through bicycling. They do a lot for the Colorado Springs community in getting children riding bicycles, and they recently added a new way of helping people of all ages with the opening of the Pedal Station.

The Pedal Station is a retail center defined as a centralized place for building a healthy and strong community through it. They plan to hold year-round classes relating to bicycle education and encouragement. The store provides affordable  refurbished bicycles to people of all ages.

Dave, also known as “The Bike Whisperer,” works as a bike mechanic at Cafe Velo, and will often volunteer time after work at the Pedal Station. He also recently did a fundraiser for his Route 66 ride by riding 4 hours straight at the velodrome on Friday, September 23rd. He covered just over a metric century during those four hours.
