Winter Bike to Work Day & Happy Hour with 303 & GirlBikeLove

News Item:

Dust off those commuter bikes because in this Global Warming winter you can ride year round and we want you to prove it to your neighbors by joining others this next Wednesday for Winter Bike to Work Day. Winter Bike to work day just like Summer Bike to work day but it's in um, the Winter. There will be breakfast stations around Boulder and best of all a Happy Hour at Reubens in Boulder hosted by GirlBikeLove.com and 303Cycling! For everyone who rode a bike there they will offer 1/2 off all draft beer, all wine, all cocktails, and all appetizers from 3-6. And better yet, they have a bike parking coral for us.

But riding in winter is only for racers and die-hards, right?
WRONG It is the die-hards who ride when the blizzard is actively happening or the wind speed is higher than the temperature, those are the die-hards. For the other 80% of the winter that's you and me. Riding to pick up your kids after school, riding to work, or just riding with no destination in mind. Cycling is a 300 days a year activity, you just have to choose which 300 days you want to be active in.

B-cycle pushing to get major expansion

From 13th and Spruce Bcycle Install

From the Daily Camera

A large contingent of local, state and federal officials are pushing the U.S. Department of Transportation to grant Boulder's application for about a half-million dollars to greatly expand the city's bike sharing program.

The city has applied for the money through the federal Transportation Community and System Preservation grant. The application requests $440,000, but a required 20-percent local match in private and in-kind investments would bring the total value of the grant to about $550,000.

The money would be used to grow the Boulder B-cycle bike-sharing program by 10 stations -- adding about 50 percent new capacity to the system that launched last spring with 100 red bikes and computerized kiosks.

Green Guru, locally turning junk into eco friendly bike products

[Son] "Where do inner tubes go after they die mamma?"

[Mom] "They end up at Green Guru of Boulder where they are turned back into useful products again."

Lewis, 33, is the president and founder of Green Guru Gear, a Boulder-based repurposing company launched two years ago that converts unusable wetsuits, inner tubes, climbing ropes and banners into bike gear and accessories.

"One of the challenges in product design, manufacturing and sourcing is ... you're always looking for suitable material," said Lewis, a cyclist and outdoors enthusiast with a background in product design. "I used to work at bike shops growing up, and I got tired of throwing away the tubes and tried to reuse them."

In 2009, Green Guru Gear was developed as a subsidiary of Denver-based Ecologic Designs Inc., an "upcycling" manufacturing business Lewis founded in 2007. Ecologic repurposes damaged or excess goods into products such as beverage cozies, bracelets and key chains, all aimed at the broader eco-conscious clientele.

Handlebar Mustache

Commuting by bike is fun and it doesn't take a fancy bike, power tap, or any carbon to do it. There aren't any training plans that have to be followed or special licenses to buy, just your will and desire. We started our Commuter Team as a non-competitive group that show their love for cycling through commuting. Some I personally know are racers and one uses it as a major source of fitness but the group is open to any and all willing to commute by bike and by no means must that activity be daily!

For all those who participated this year on the commuter team I want to say THANK YOU. In nearly 12 months the team racked up over 25,000 miles which resulted in a total of nearly $4,700 dollars in gas alone saved, not to mentioned the savings their health insurance plans had (or will have in years to come). Handlebar Mustache has kindly donated T-shirts to us and we are looking for your business to join in and reward some of these riders for making a commitment.
