Listen to internet radio with overthetop on Blog Talk Radio

Synopsis
After learning the correct pronunciation of "Moninger", we discuss Scott's roots in cycling, motivation to continue his winning ways, his goals and also who he considered his toughest competition. We then delve into retirement and how an athlete fills the void of no more competition. Scott explains the reasoning behind his amazing 90s hairstyle, differences between some of the teams with which he raced and we also spend a bit of time bashing Kansas terrain (it's his home state so he can good naturedly get away with this). Moninger discusses how he landed his role with NBC Sports as a Tour de France analyst and also talk about what he enjoys most about his role as a cycling coach.

Remembering the Past: Red Zinger exhibit at Boulder Library this month

News Item:

Sounds like a great Cycling History exhibit this month at the Boulder Library.

From the Daily Camera

This month, the Boulder Public Library is displaying an exhibit on the Red Zinger, with old photos, newspaper clippings and race brochures, on the bridge over Boulder Creek in the main library branch.

"This is really a Boulder story -- that's one of the things that really turned me on about it," said Douglas Lee, a professional writer who put together the display in collaboration with the Carnegie Branch Library for Local History.

What you need to know for Stage 6

News Item:

Saturday is going to be extremely fun and bike centric, but to keep your fun level up and frustration level down watch the video below explaining some of the "need to knows" like parking (but who will be driving). 303Cycling will be in downtown Boulder (15th and Pearl) announcing next to a giant JumboTran as we interview the Mayor and talk to Michael Aisner while he is out on course. We will also be at the CandyShop on 15th street. As mentioned in the video USAPro Boulder has created an interactive website yet at the time of posting this map does not seem to be operating correctly. Also know, to get onto Flagstaff you will need a wristband, learn how you can get a Flagstaff wristband and for those not going to Flagstaff, here are time estimates of when they will be where on stage 6. While this should not need be stated, be mindful of the racers on course, this is not the Basque region, you do not need think you are living like a euro. We can rise above this.

Will Flagstaff Finish live up to its Expectation?

News Item:

How influential will Flag Finish have

So how influential will this finish be to the race? Do you believe the winner will really be crowned on Saturday with Sunday remaining as a victory lap around Denver? Take our poll on how the finish impact the overall results of the race.

Tom Danielson weighs in on the selection of Flagstaff finish in Stage 6

Flagstaff hill climb is arguably one of the best climbs that really show cases beauty and athleticism of the bike loving town of Boulder. Denver can piggy back off of Golden's Lookout Mtn Climb which was on the route of the USPCC last year and a place where some of the craziest fans where. As Boulder was left out of the tour last year the induction of Flagstaff to the route this year might make Lookout's stage seem like a lame party. But Boulder has had to fight for it, fans are required to get wristbands if they want to be on Flagstaff, this is in effort to prevent too many from flocking to the hills. Boulder has also had to push back on Open Space "museum" packers and try to have stage finish moved or legally challenged. USAToday picked up the legal battle

But in May, a group of activists led by former town coucilman Steve Pomerance challenged the plan. Pomerance, who said he has ridden his bicycle up Flagstaff hundreds of times, reminded the council that the final mile-long segment of road to the amphitheater technically was on open space. According to Boulder's town charter, which was written in the mid-1980s, only non-competitive activities such as hiking and biking are allowed on the protected land.

Attention Boulder Cyclist - Niwot Road under construction

News Item:

From Boulder County Transportation email

Boulder County will be removing the pavement for a one-mile stretch of Niwot Road west of 55th at the end of next week as phase one of the Neva /Niwot Road reconstruction project. From that point forward, one part of anther of Neva and Niwot Roads between Foothills Highway and North 63rd Street will be likely be gravel through early November.

Also, Neva Road is scheduled to be closed from 39th Street to Fairways Drive the week of September 10th. No traffic, including bicycles will be allowed through the closure during daytime hours (8:30 AM to 4:00 PM). The road will be open evenings and weekdays however, construction conditions will exist.

Once complete, the entire stretch of Neva / Niwot will be repaved at full width including 4-foot shoulders. Our goal is to have the project done by the end of the year, but it is very likely that weather will delay at least part of the project until early spring 2013.

Boulder County is sending out regular construction updates on the project. Anyone interested in receiving them should contact the Transportation Department at the email below.

Please use caution when riding and remember, "Courtesy is Contagious"!!!!
