Sugarloaf Hill Climb

July 1st, Mike Horgan HC Race heads up the Sugarloaf route

Sugarloaf may not be hardest climb in Boulder County but it isn't far behind. To the "summit" it gains 2735 feet of elevation in 9.6 miles so clearly isn't for the meek at heart. For many the "summit" is the highest point on paved road, however for those daring to ride some hard pack gravel, the road descends for a little over a mile then turns into gravel at a much lessor pitch than what the rider has just completed.

For those on a mountain bike or cross bike this ride opens up many other options besides the typical out-and-back. The most common alternative route takes the rider on the Switzerland Trail and who's entrance to that road is just to the right at the summit of the climb.

The ride up Sugarload starts on Boulder Canyon which has a Ok shoulder most of the way, the worst part about the entire ride is the 100ft of tunnel to ride through. Best advice is to have a tail light on your bike and use it while riding through. After the tunnel it's about a mile to the right hand turn up Sugarloaf. Just a 100 yards before Sugarloaf on the left is Magnolia which is THE hardest climb in Boulder County!.

At first the ride is mellow-ish but you will find that is gradually gets steeper as you become more exhausted and by the end it is fairly bare landscape and exposed due to a fire in the 80's. Once at the top a look back over the Boulder Valley is enough to tell you this climb was worth it... we hope.

Interview with University Hill Race Promoter

[303Cycling]: The Uni Hill Criterium was last produced in 2003, with roots stemming back to the Coors Classic. What was the motivation for bringing it back 8 years later?

Back in February I was invited to sit in on a Boulder Special Events Task Force. Basically it was a panel of area race directors brought together to address current and potential issues facing Boulder County/City roads and the growing numbers of events. At the meeting one of the City employees mentioned how much she loved the Uni Hill Criterium back in the day. Ask any race director and rarely do you have a municipality saying how much they love you shutting down their roads. I smirked, looked over at a smiling Jon Tarkington across the table, and asked, “Jon,

ACA Use of Timing System Suspended

News Item:

May 6, 2011

Contact: Chris McGee, Executive Director execdir@americancycling.org

Dear ACA members-

The ACA, under the direction of Chris McGee, Executive Director, and Bill Barr, President of the Board of Directors, has decided to temporarily suspend use of the timing system as of today. The two exceptions to this suspension are KHMTT and the John Stenner Memorial State Time Trial (please see below).

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for working together in the last month to implement the system. We have experienced a great level of cooperation and understanding from our members, but it is not fair on any of us to continue in this current course of action. I apologize for the abruptness of this decision, but after Koppenberg and KHMTT this week, a decision had to be made.

Why? We are having significant problems with the system, and have not received the necessary equipment and technical support from our vendor to solve the problems. Please trust me - it is not for lack of effort on our part. Due diligence was given during the search for the system and vendor, and testing at a cross race last fall was a huge success. Despite the ACA's best efforts, the system still has significant issues to be addressed.
