Updates on Construction on James Canyon Dr. & Fourmile Canyon

James Canyon Drive Update

If you’ve traveled along James Canyon Drive lately you’ve seen that the gravel patches are expanding daily as KTI crews remove the old asphalt so they can work on the subsurface and get it prepped for new asphalt (see photo below). Crews will focus current efforts on the stretch of road between the intersection with Lefthand and largest retaining wall that was built around the curve below town. After all material is stripped and the road base is repaired, paving operations will begin, which is planned for the week of July 9.

The good news is that the old asphalt will not going to waste. KTI is currently grinding the old material in order to create the road base that the new asphalt will sit on. A photo of the ground asphalt mountain and grinding operation is below. KTI will be reusing all the ground up asphalt they create.

Fourmile Canyon/Wall Street Update

Longer Work Day and Delays at Mile 10

Starting on Monday morning, right around the 10-mile mark (10000 Fourmile Canyon Drive), CEI will start drilling 10 40-foot deep caissons for a new retaining wall. In order to shorten their duration in this spot, CEI has asked for and been granted longer work hours and longer road closure hours. The road is extremely narrow in this location, so it will be too tight to operate a drill and move cars by the work site at the same time. Extended hours and closures:

  • Road closed 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Open 1 to 1:30 p.m.
  • Road closed 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

When work begins in this location, CEI will need to use traffic signals in the evening because the road will be reduced to one-lane at all times until work is complete, which the estimate will take between two and three weeks. The other traffic signal that is currently in use will also remain due to the lane reduction, so give yourself a little more time to get down the road and please do not run red lights as this could result in a head-on crash.
