George Patten, 26, often rides his bike along the busy Cherry Creek Trail to his classes in urban and regional planning at the University of Colorado Denver.

"It's practically a highway," Patten said.

He said the trail is particularly busy with cyclists during peak commuting times. But he said he would consider using city streets to get to campus only if there are better bike routes in place.

Virtual cycling training facility opens
By Doug Storum
November 30, 2010 --

BOULDER - Mike Ricci of D3 Multisport is opening D3 Energy Lab, an indoor cycling training facility.

The facility, at 3200 Valmont St. in Boulder, features the CompuTrainer, a virtual course that is projected onto the wall.

Up to eight riders can train at the same time, on their own bikes on treadmills, on the same virtual course. Courses can be customized, and the system's interactive real course videos include famous courses (including Tour de France stages and Ironman courses) to be input and raced. This allows riders to measure their performance against one another, and themselves, as the system measures and records a variety of performance parameters, including speed, calories and power output.

Classes are up and running and sessions are available mornings, lunchtime, evenings and weekends, and for a limited time, new riders can experience a session for free. See www.d3multisport.com/EnergyLab/schedule for more information.

Ricci is a certified USAT Level III coach. He has owned D3 Multisport Inc. since 2000, and he is the head coach for the national champion University of Colorado triathlon team.

Granby considers sponsoring purse for mountain biking race

On the heels of two years of mountain biking national championships, Granby Ranch's SolVista bike park officials are hoping to gain the town's title sponsorship for the next big race in the Granby area.

During budget talks on Nov. 23, town board members directed the town staff to research where in the budget $25,000 could be drawn to create a prize purse that could attract to Granby the “best of the best” in the racing world during the spring shoulder season.

“The National Championships the last couple of years has put Granby on the map,” said SolVista Bike Park Director Matt Thompson. “The bike park is seeking and hoping to promote and create bigger types of events in order to attract a broader range of people and get our name out there and draw more people to Granby.

“We need a purse so that we can attract world-renowned, world-class riders to come to Granby, and that will bring the amateurs,” he added. “The purse can have a drastic impact on the amount of people that come to a regional race or a national race.”

West Trail Study Update

The CCG's draft package of preliminary recommendations for discussion at the December 6th Open House is available below. The public comment period will be from November 30 - December 12, 2010. The public meeting on December 6, 2010 will be from 6-9 pm at the East Boulder Recreation Center.

A small excerpt of the document:

There are two issues on which the CCG has agreed that they have done all they can and about which they are unlikely to come to further agreement. These two “non-consensus” issues are mountain bike access opportunities and a subset of horse access opportunities.

Regarding mountain biking access to the West TSA, the CCG held a large public meeting on September 13, 2010 in order to hear different community perspectives on the issue and discuss options and concerns. At the end of that meeting, the CCG determined that they would be unable to find agreement on if/where to recommend mountain biking in the West TSA.

Regarding horse access opportunities, the CCG established a small subcommittee to discuss options for horse access. The subcommittee identified several trails on which they agreed that horse access should be allowed. The subcommittee also identified several trails on which they could not agree about horse access and/or for which an agreement on horse access was contingent on other trail decisions made by the CCG.

Louisville's Pearl Izumi sues Garmin-Sliptream cycling team over 12 winged suits

Louisville-based Pearl Izumi has filed a lawsuit against Slipstream Sports — which manages the Garmin-Slipstream pro cycling team — over a dozen “winged suits” that the technical clothing manufacturer made for the riders.

The winged suits were developed by Pearl Izumi’s advanced clothing design team known as The Speed Shop. The group of developers works exclusively on making technical clothing that allows athletes — such as runners, cyclists and triathletes — to shave off seconds by reducing drag.

The winged suits are cycling outfits with “an aerodynamic winged sleeve for smoothing airflow around the bicep area of the cyclist,” according to the lawsuit filed last week in Boulder District Court.

Pearl Izumi, which has been sponsoring the Garmin-Slipstream team since January 2009, claims that they gave 12 prototype winged suits to the cycling team for them to test in competition in mid-June.

New trail in Superior -- Mayhoffer to Coalton Road

Map of Superior side of new trail

In the last year I have discovered some of the great trails that sit south of Boulder, Dowdy Draw, Mayhoffer-Singletree Trail and High plains Greenbelt. These trails are awesome for those rides where you just want to escape and let your brain melt away, not like ones like Hall or Walker Ranch where you have to stay "on" nearly every moment. Now coming in Spring of 2011 Boulder County Openspace will be opening another trail, one that will connect Mayhoffer to Coalton Road. This means you can nearly ride from Layafette all the way to the flatirons on trails!
