UPDATE: Cyclist Identified in Bike v. Flatbed Truck collision on Flagstaff Today

UPDATE 6PM – From Boulder Daily Camera

Former professional cyclist and Boulder resident Phil Zajicek lost an arm after colliding with a flatbed truck Tuesday afternoon while riding down Flagstaff Road.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near 1000 Flagstaff Road. Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Shawn Wycoff said that a group of about six to eight cyclists were heading east down Flagstaff at a “high-rate of speed,” when one of them, the 36-year-old Zajicek, collided with a flatbed truck heading west.

Wycoff said the cyclist hit the metal part of the truck’s bed, completely severing his arm. He was transported to a hospital operating room in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

No other information was released on Zajicek’s status. His identification was first reported on the competitive cycling website VeloNews.com, and later confirmed by multiple Camera sources.

The truck driver has been identified as Joseph Ayer, 38. State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid said Ayer was not injured, and remained on scene to cooperate with authorities after the crash.

Police shut down Flagstaff Road for while the State Patrol investigated the crash, reopening it around 3:20 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not yet said whether they believe the truck or the cyclist crossed the center line, or specified how fast either party was traveling prior to the collision.
