Here is a short article Ryan worked up with some tips on Winter Training:
The weather outside is colder, the leaves are off the trees and the amount of races available has drastically dropped off. Don’t get the racing blues, this is arguably the most important part of your racing year/macrocycle. The base phase, usually starting in the winter, offers great opportunities when the weather may turn frightful or lets us take the opportunity to enjoy the snow. Building strength and a large aerobic base allows the athlete to go into the next phase/mesocycle stronger, less risk of injury and a large base to build speed off of. Below are some tips to help.
Swimming – work on technique w/ drills such as fist drill or band on the ankles, end workout w/ 500yrd pull set for sport specific strength
Bike- trainer can help shorten workouts by providing consistent workouts; riding long, easy rides while watching football or a movie will build a large aerobic base and burn off the holiday treats; also work on increasing cadence during this time
Run- treadmill can give great feedback as over-striding will bog down the motor when jamming the foot into the belt, also to keep it interesting, do short intervals on the treadmill; trail running in the winter is terrific as it builds sport specific strength on the hills not only in the upper legs, but the foot and ankles as well.
Gym- most of the year it is hard get into lifting with races, etc, but in the winter this is a great time; leg presses help immensely, lat pull downs for the swim and since power is generated from the core, planks, burpees, etc will produce great results come summer
During the holiday season, get outside as well. There are many gains to be made by going out for a couple hours snowshoeing or cross country skiing. Enjoy this season and relax….It will help prepare for the upcoming racing season both physically and mentally.
