• Letter from Editor, Bill Plock, Why I Wanted to Join BRAC.

Submitted by Bill Plock on February 16th, 2021

Some people may wonder why I wanted to join the BRAC board, now known as ColoradoRacing.org. After all I am not known as a bike racer or a race promoter or race director. Those have been the typical titles of most board members. I am more known, athletically at least, as a triathlete—hopefully professionally more known as the owner/publisher of 303Endurance—which owns 303Cycling.com and 303Triathlon.com and the 303Endurance Podcast.

So I am not your typical board member. But that’s precisely why I wanted to join the team. The current board has a lot of talent—on and off the bike. They care about cycling first and foremost. They care about racing too. They, like me want to do everything possible to foster the best cycling culture in the country.  Read more

      • Riding, Being Safe and Having Fun in the Cold–Things to Think About

Submitted by Bill Plock on November 30th, 2020

This article will hopefully point out some not so obvious challenges, ideas and solutions to help you enjoy winter riding outdoors more.

Riding outside in the Colorado winter comes with increased risks, but often with un-anticipated rewards. I, like so many, have come to enjoy indoor riding much more thanks to my smart trainer (Saris H3) and my motivating software, Zwift. But it doesn’t replace the crisp Colorado air and snowy vistas and a sense of not only being outside and refreshed, but sort of conquering the elements too.  Read more

        • Biking Rollins Pass, Epic, Historical and Unforgettable

Submitted by Bill Plock on July 3rd, 2020

Biking over Rollins Pass was Epic, but far from historical. For thousands of years people have been traversing Rollins Pass. Native American hunting parties even built rock walls in the scree near the top to funnel game long before the first horse drawn wagons paid a toll to cross the Continental Divide in the 1870’s. In 1904 trains began to make the arduous trip passing through tunnels, twisting like a corkscrew and making their way to the top at 11,600 feet. The road grade had to be kept less than 4% to make it possible, but the biggest challenges came in the Winter when massive snow drifts would make it impassable.

On our bike ride we learned all about those drifts, but back in the day, particularly on the West side of the pass, huge snowsheds, miles long, were built in attempt to keep the tracks clear. In fact, near the top, above tree line, a small village named Corona (ironically) sprouted from the harsh landscape and housed stranded train crews and service personnel to provide brief respite from the bitter conditions.  Read more

          • To Zwift or Not to Zwift?

Submitted by Bill Plock on December 9th, 2019

I have tried both and so far I find Zwift more motivating. And that is the purpose of this article. To share why I bought this trainer and why I think indoor riding is clearly growing very fast and will continue to grow.  Read more
