Riding the extremes – it’s all about . . . the water!

By Lauren Greenfield

109 degreesIt’s hot. 103 recently broke a record. You want to get your hours in. You need to get your miles in. And that same indoor trainer that you use from November through March and then again in May just isn’t looking too appealing.

I say get out and RIDE. Just be smart. Do a Tour D’eau around Boulder County. Some of my faves:

– Bathroom(s) at Tom Watson Park have COLD fountains. free.

– Lyons visitor center well is fabulous when it’s open. Water fountain suffices when it’s not. Free.

– Hygiene Purple Door market. water – free. Ice a reasonable .30/bottle.

– There’s a fabulous resident who provides a free “ice water” in a large orange jug on St. Vrain Road on the weekends. I’ve never met them, but always shout out a thanks as I’m riding away!

– And the best is the community well just yards from the top of Ward. (But do stop at the store for a cookie – you know you deserved it).

Remember, those small general stores (Ward, Raymond, Hygiene) depend on us – throw a buck in the water donation so that they will continue to serve free and cold water. Amazing to me was post-flood, Jamestown Mercantile provided bottles of water to cyclists; free, even when they were closed.

Other tips:

– Sunscreen before you put your clothes on to avoid the painful missed spot.

– Need extra fluids? Freeze a stash of disposable water bottles or juice boxes; stuff one in your jersey pocket. Helps with back pain AND might provide that extra hydration just to get you to that next stop.

– Be smart. Listen to your body. 100+ may okay to ride 2-3 hours in the saddle, but maybe you save the 5 hour day ’til next week.

And always have a few emergency dollars stashed in the tool kit for a kids’ lemonade stand!
