June, 17th 2019, Longmont, CO…. Stephen Gray, the driver who hit Triny Willerton on May 8, 2018, plead guilty today in a Longmont court to careless driving causing bodily injury. With that plea he was assessed four points against his license, a $300 fine, 60 hours of community service and will have to complete the bicycle friendly driving course developed by Bicycle Colorado.
When asked how she felt after the long battle with Mr. Gray’s finally pleading guilty for hitting her from behind when she attempted to turn left from Nelson road onto 65th, Triny said, “I am really grateful to the Hannah Fowler, Kara Stewart, Nick Trevino, Michael Dougherty and everyone at the District Attorney’s office for the 13 months of work they put into this case. I am also thankful to my attorney Stuart Mann. I am very happy that Bill 175 got signed and that it will protect anyone in the future or better yet it will prevent crashes like mine from ever happening in the first place. I am so grateful to the judge. She was incredibly just and I am very happy with today’s outcome. I feel like this chapter is finally over and my family and I can move forward with our lives. I am very passionate about creating safer roads and will continue to do my best to achieve this. I am very proud of our state tonight.”
Triny has been very instrumental in helping push through recent legislation sponsored by Senator Mike Foote and Representative Dylan Roberts and signed into law by Governor Polis on May 28th. Had this law been in place when Mr. Gray hit Ms. Willerton, it’s a good bet the penalty would’ve been much more severe.
