Driver faces DUI, vehicular assault charges in collision with cyclist in Longmont

A 42-year-old driver suspected of driving away after striking a cyclist on the south edge of Longmont on Sunday faces charges of vehicular assault and DUI.

Juan De Santiago-Tovar, of Longmont, was booked into the Boulder County Jail at 3:37 p.m. Sunday. He also faces charges of hit and run, careless driving causing bodily injury and driving without a valid license.

De Santiago-Tovar’s appeared in court Monday at the jail and his bond was set at $3,000. He is scheduled to be charged on Wednesday.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said that at around 10 a.m. Sunday, a 31-year-old Boulder cyclist was eastbound on Plateau Road and turning left onto Moonstone Court in front of a red 1993 Toyota pickup that was also turning left.

Lewis said the truck attempted to pass the cyclist on the left when it struck the bike, throwing the rider into a grassy area. The cyclist was taken to Longmont United Hospital with serious injuries.

The truck left the scene, but was located at about 11:45 at 95th Street and Ogallala Road, where De Santiago-Tovar was arrested. The truck had marks on it indicating it was in a crash, according to police.

The cyclist, identified in reports as Travis Lechner, was discharged from the hospital Sunday evening, according to spokeswoman Kirsten Pfotenhauer.

A bicyclist was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash this morning south of Longmont near Plateau Road and Moonstone Court, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

A man driving a red, 1993 Toyota truck with hay bales in the back struck the cyclist, a man in his 30s, at about 10 a.m. and left the scene, Sgt. Rob Madden said.

The victim was taken to Longmont United Hospital with “serious bodily injury,” Madden said.

He said a trooper responding to the crash saw the truck at 95th Street and Ogallala Road and arrested the driver at about 11:45 a.m. He noted there were identifying marks on truck indicating it was in a crash.

Madden said alcohol is being investigated as a factor in the crash.

The name of the man arrested wasn’t immediately available.
