    The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic started out as a race between two brothers, Tom and Jim Mayer, with a Baby Ruth candy bar as the winner’s prize. Jim worked as a brakeman for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, which ran the steam powered locomotive between Durango and Silverton. Tom was a young cyclist who grew up near the train tracks to Silverton. Read more

      On June 29th, I spent more than seven hours on my bike riding with my eighteen year old son Alex. We were riding from Snowmass to Crested Butte Village in Colorado. We rode about 170 kilometers and climbed almost 10,000 feet together. It may sound like a lot of riding and climbing, but in the grand scheme of things, it was just another day on the bike. To be more precise: ‘It was just another day out of seven long days of the Mavic Haute Route Rockies.’ Read more

          • Pro bicycle racing returns to its roots in Vail with the Colorado Classic

            The second annual Colorado Classic — a UCI-sanctioned 2.HC race (the highest category outside of World Tour races) featuring the sport’s top men and women professionals — will be held Aug. 16-19, 2018, with exciting courses that provide fan-friendly spectating opportunities. Stage 1 on Aug. 16 will be a circuit course through Vail Village and Stage 2 will put riders on the legendary mountain time trial course between Vail Village and the Vail Pass summit. Read more
