Boulder Roubaix – Don’t Miss It!

With a huge rise in dirt road riding/racing popularity over the last decade, the Boulder Roubaix continues to be the quintessential gravel grinder event for cyclists in the Front Range Area. Named after the Paris Roubaix or sometimes referred to as The Hell of the North, the race is a test of bike handling skills, endurance, and sometimes weather.

On Saturday be on the lookout for Australian professional cyclist Joe Lewis from Holowesko Citadel, who flatted out of the 2015 race but is hoping for a great day running Michelins this year. Olympian, Boulderite, and 2-time Boulder Roubaix winner Mara Abbott will be out race day greeting the junior ladies, helping them get lined up before their starts, and be our official starter for these categories. Former Garmin and Optum pro racer  Mike Friedman, will also be helping with the junior racers. He currently runs the Pedaling Minds program offering cycling programs for elementary aged students. Lastly, a new women’s beginner group – Category 5 – will be available to encourage more beginner participation. Speaking of beginners – 303Cycling/Triathlon’s Khem Suthiwan (Palmares Racing) and her Blue Norcross EX will be racing in the beginner category this Saturday.

In person registration is still available today, April 6th between 5-8pm at Mercedes Benz of Westminster. Race day registration (April 8th) may be limited due to capacity of categories, riders must be registered 1 hour before race start, and cash will only be accepted. After the race, riders can bring their race number to Ruben’s Burger Bistro or Boulder Beer (April 8th only) for a free pint as well as Vecchios between April 8th-22nd for 20% off any Feedback Sports products.

Already registered? We encourage athletes or team delegates to pick up race packets TONIGHT (Thursday, April 6th) at the Mercedes-Benz event to minimize race day pick up mayhem. Delegates will need a copy (photo) of USAC licenses and signed waivers from their teammates.

The ‘other Roubaix’: Pros and amateurs set for battle on Colorado’s dirt roads

By Neal Rogers – CyclingTips

There are no cobblestones. The roads weren’t built by Romans. It doesn’t finish in a velodrome.

That said, Colorado’s Boulder Roubaix, which takes place April 8, one day before its namesake, has become an American classic in its own right. Held on the dirt roads north of Boulder since 1990, the race has become a rite of spring for amateurs and pros alike.

The event has been a labor of love for organizer Chris Grealish of Denver-Boulder Couriers, co-founder of the CrossVegas UCI World Cup event, who puts on the Boulder Roubaix every other year.

The event has gone through different iterations, and course changes. For a few years, the route was used as part of a Boulder stage race. And though it sometimes conflicts with national-level races — this year, it’s just a few days before the Tour of the Gila stage race in New Mexico, and on the same weekends as the Alabama Cycling Classic — Grealish says he receives personal fulfillment in making sure it continues.

Asked his favorite memory of the event, he answered, “The feeling of satisfaction I get from giving everything we have, to make the event the best it can be.”
