Boulder, Colo., May 17, 2016—Set for its 25th anniversary, the Boulder Peak Triathlon presented by Voler and produced by Life TimeSM – The Healthy Way of Life Company, will take place on Sunday, July 10 at the Boulder Reservoir. Making the occasion even more special are two Colorado residents, Brendan Hemp, age 52, and Bruce Wilson, age 71, who will be suiting up to compete in their 25th consecutive race of the Boulder Peak—having not missed a race since its inception.
Founded in 1992 with 400 competitors, the Life Time Tri Boulder Peak has a rich tradition of providing athletes of all abilities—from first-timers to pro triathletes—a proving ground for course records and personal bests. Twenty-five time racer Hemp says, “The Boulder Peak is a special race for me. Somewhere along the way, it turned into an annual event and I’ve watched it grow and develop over the past 25 years. Between the challenging course and the camaraderie of the local community, it’s something that I look forward to each year and now the race is even more special because this is the second year my daughter and I are racing it together.”
An ideal tune-up race, ‘The Peak’ offers a well-timed, mid-summer race for those training for IRONMAN Boulder on August 7. It also serves as the USA Triathlon Rocky Mountain Regional Championship, giving athletes the opportunity to qualify for the National Championships on August 13 in Omaha, Neb. Athletes enrolled in the IRONMAN All World Athlete rankings will earn points at the race.
Gladys Cueto, Life Time Tri Boulder Peak Race Director, adds of the event, “The Boulder Peak Tri is one of the most famous International distance U.S. triathlon races; we’re thrilled to celebrate its 25th year as we honor past traditions and continue to build strong connections in the Boulder community. We’re excited to welcome more athletes into ‘The Peak’ this year to test their limits and accomplish their personal goals while racing on such a famed course.”
Course
The International race course has repeatedly been named one of the top triathlon courses in the country. It starts with an iconic swim in the Boulder Reservoir, followed by a bike up Boulder’s Olde Stage Road, which boasts an average grade of 15 percent on its 6,500-foot summit, and finishes with a run along the Boulder Reservoir Dam Roads with breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.
King/Queen of the Mountain Competition
‘Reach the Peak’, the King and Queen of the Mountain (KOM/QOM) style competition is back for the second year, offering a time trial competition from the beginning of the bike course to the top of Olde Stage Road. The 7-mile race within the bike leg covers the first segment of the bike course and climbs to 6,500 feet with grades up to 15 percent. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest male and female over 40 and under 40 as well as the fastest male and female on a relay team. Caveat: only competitors who complete the triathlon or relay will be eligible for KOM/QOM prizes.
charlesLongest Transition Award
Returning this year, the lighthearted “Longest Transition” award—consisting of a lawn chair and case of beer, and originally started by Boulder Peak Founder Paul Karlsson—will be awarded to the competitor who spends the most time in transition.
New Local Non-Profit Component with Boulder Valley Schools
Boulder Valley Schools will be providing meals to the participants following the race and also selling snacks and beverages to competitors and spectators. All proceeds will be donated back to the school district.
