Bike Colorado Springs is Ready to Roll

On November 17th, Bike Colorado Springs was ready to formally get the community together at its Kick Off party. Bike Colorado Springs is a program of the Trails and Open Space Coalition to “promote safe bicycling and the development and maintenance bicycling infrastructure” in the Pikes Peak Region. The location was the USA Cycling headquarters, and they threw a great party!

The goal of the social event was to bring members of the community together to highlight some of the projects that are being either worked on or considered. The city is working on numerous infrastructure improvements, and improving bicycle access is one.

One project is to create Fat Bike access to Sand Creek within the existing stabilization project. They plan to have a demo day in conjunction with Global Fat Bike Day on December 3rd. If you don’t have a fat bike, you can arrange to borrow one!

Upcoming projects were presented so people could learn more and ask questions

The kick off event featured local band, Lost Luggage, whose sound system was powered by the Mobile Music Project. Attendees just had to sit on a bike and pedal to power the electronics, so that it was completely off-grid. The event even had bike valet available, although the winter storm that blew in made the planned ride in from Triple S Brewing a little smaller. And no bicycle event is really ever complete without some beer. Beverages were provided by Cerberus Brewing Co.

A few people took advantage of the bike valet on a chilly and icy night.

Colorado Springs has a lot of potential for cycling infrastructure, and most of the people in attendance would probably agree there is plenty of room for improvement! Get involved with Bike Colorado Springs if you want to help in the process.
