Amanda’s Bike Wheel is Fast, but Her Potter’s Wheel is Magic

By Bill Plock

If you have ever ridden with, or at least tried to keep up with Amanda Knutson, you know she is fast. But did you know she is an artist? From her studio in Boulder she makes ceramics, many inspired by her love of cycling.

Amanda draws inspiration from riding, but also from being involved in the cycling industry. She has been a race director and/or marketing manager for events including Race Across America, 6-12-24 WTTC, Haute Route Rockies, Elephant Rock, and many more.

As an avid rider, she can be found racing road, cyclocross, supporting local rides, riding high into the mountains on gravel roads, and cruising downtown on her commuter.  When off the bike, she is often timing races (running, cycling and skiing events), camping, and spending time with her two huskies.

In addition to cycling, she has life-long passion for ceramics.  In 2012, she graduated with a double-degree in both psychology and fine art and completed a year-long artist residency program after.  Though she took a 3-year hiatus from clay after moving west in 2013, she has happily reconnected with her craft.  Last fall, she opened her own studio space in east Boulder!

“I love replacing everyday utilitarian objects with handmade works of art. I feel that this helps one slow down and appreciate a tactile understanding of what may otherwise seem to be a mundane use of an item. My goal is to create pieces that give character and awareness to the daily experiences from drinking from a mug, eating out of a bowl, hiding keepsakes in a jar, and so many more.  I seek to enhance and enrich the daily happenings with items that can be enjoyed in subtle, yet gratifying ways.”

If you’re looking for a special gift for the holiday season, consider placing a custom order with her now through December 5th!  In the meantime, discover one of her unique, handmade pieces at etsy.com/shop/amandakceramics or contact her directly for any questions.  All items are dishwasher and microwave safe and respond best to daily use and love.
