2nd Annual Crank It Forward Gala

Second Annual Crank It Forward Gala to Benefit Local Bicycle Riders and Communities

Furthering Cyclists 4 Community’s mission of improving the safety and enjoyment of our roads for everyone

BOULDER, Colorado, Wednesday, May 9 th , 2018– Cyclists 4 Community (“C4C”) is preparing to host its second annual fundraising gala, Crank It Forward. This amazing event will be at Rembrandt Yard on Friday May 18 th , from 6-10pm.

Last year, C4C raised over $50,000 that has been used towards enhancing cycling safety and driver awareness on heavily trafficked roads in Boulder County. The group has been hard at work this past year, putting donations to work to build safer cycling conditions, safer and more
visible cyclists, and more aware community of drivers. Late last year, C4C worked with the Boulder County Transportation department to place signs on area roadways advising drivers to allow for 3 feet to pass cyclists, along with road signs to inform automobiles that they may
cross the center line if safe to pass. C4C also launched an initiative with Boulder County and the City of Boulder to promote daytime front and back light use for extra visibility.

New Programmable Variable Messaging Board Deployed
Last week, after working for months with Boulder County and the State of Colorado, the new
Variable Messaging Board, funded by C4C, was placed for the first time just northeast of Boulder on Jay Road. Throughout the season, this large, easily readable sign will travel to a variety of roadside locations around Boulder County promoting cycling safety and driver awareness.

Bicycle Friendly Driver Program

This year, C4C began working in conjunction with Boulder County Transportation Department to help fund the development of a Bicycle-Friendly Driver program, modeled after a similar successful program in Fort Collins. This program was recently adopted as a state and national standard by Bicycle Colorado and the League of American Cyclists. Boulder County will develop the program using its own funds, along with additional funding, if granted.  C4C will invest $20,000 in matching funds to help market the program to both professional driving fleets, and the general public.

Future Plans

C4C is working to help both the City of Boulder and Boulder County develop a long-term Master Plan that incorporates new features that includes more warning signs where high cyclist-motor interaction occurs, more lighted crossings and underpasses, and the eventual construction of more dedicated bikeways across the county along heavily cycled routes..

About Cyclists 4 Community

As cyclists, business people, and citizens, Cyclists 4 Community aims to build a stronger relationship with all users of the roads, trails, and bikeways.  We do this by providing support for Boulder County communities through philanthropic activities including disaster relief, support of non-profit community organizations, promoting responsible cycling, and greater cycling participation through initiatives that improve the safety of cyclists on our roadways. We feel an increasing need to promote driver awareness and cycling safety, as more and more
traffic comes to our area every year. We also work with cyclists on how to ride courteously and safely in the presence of motorists and pedestrians.

The idea for Cyclists 4 Community started in September 2013, immediately following the devastating floods that left Boulder County, and especially the towns we love to ride in, in ruins. As cyclists, we felt that it was time to make a stand and help these communities bounce back.
During our first year, we held 3 events, the Cyclists 4 Jamestown, the Fat Tire Flurry winter ride to Jamestown, and Cyclists 4 Lyons, which combined raised more than $200,000 to help the towns of Jamestown and Lyons recover.  Since that time, we’ve helped with relief for families affected by the 2015 Cold Springs fire in Nederland, and families in need through support of the
Emergency Family Assistance Association and Boulder Food Rescue.
