Rick Crawford confesses to aiding doping riders

BOULDER, Colorado (VN) — Cycling coach Rick Crawford, an elite-level coach and collegiate cycling director, has admitted to doping two riders, one of which was Levi Leipheimer, between 1999 and 2001.

Former professional cyclist Scott Mercier is set to take the helm of the Colorado Mesa University cycling program after Crawford admitted his involvement in the doping activities to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Crawford will stay on as head coach at CMU.

USADA is coming to Colorado Racing

It was announced at the Local Associations of USAC meeting last weekend that USADA is developing a testing program that will provide education and testing resources of athletes at the amateur level of cycling and that program will be coming to Colorado in 2013. The program was piloted in the Florida area already where apparent drug usage was high and so high that some could say that Florida is leading the effort to clean up amateur racing by creating their own Florida Clean Ride Fund. But even so, tempers are still high as earlier in September a race director in Florida refused WADA access to riders

When WADA drug testers showed up unannounced at the 2012-13 Florida State Championship Series last weekend, race promoter Dave Bergen refused to allow the technicians to collect samples because “he had no prior warning or notification” and he had “never seen dope testing conducted” for a local amateur event.

Very inspiring evening with Retul and Boulder Junior Cycling last night in Boulder while George Thomas interviewed some of the members and their parents about their involvement with the sport. Their singular, innocent passion for cycling is very refreshing, especially in light of all the doping scandals in the professional ranks. Being in the same room as these junior riders is so refreshing and their passion is infectious, one rider is working hard to race in Europe after his senior year, two are completely psyched to ride to school tomorrow in the snow and all loved the training session they had in the rain today. While I might not have been looking at the next national champion, doesn't matter, this is how cycling should be, lets do what we can to help it grow.
