2010 North Boulder Park Report

News Item:

It was a great day of racing at the North Boulder Classic. Decent size crowds turned out for the later afternoon races and the Mens Pro race did not disappoint. There was a decent size break that lapped the field with about 6 laps to go. The Junior Gramin team went to the front right away to keep the pace high for their break away man Alex Howes. The Junior Garmin team executed to perfection and lead Alex Howes to the win out sprinting Sean Sullivan and Jorge Espinoza.

North Boulder Sponsor reflects on days past of cycling

News Item:

One of the 2010 sponsors of the North Boulder Park Criterium, QuickLeft takes us down memory of cycling.

This year, Quick Left has the opportunity to sponsor the Category 4 women’s prize list for the 2010 North Boulder Park Classic. This criterium has a long and rich history in Boulder—it started out in the mid 1970’s as a stage in the Red Zinger and later on in the Coors Classic. The town of Boulder was so enamored with bike racing that the Red Zinger Mini Classic races soon followed.

I got my start racing with the Mini Classics back in 1986 at age 12. I got second to last in my first race. I didn’t have real lycra bike shorts. I had one of those white Bell hardshell helmets with the red reflective tape. But I came back the next year anyway. I was hooked.

1987 was the Red Zinger Mini Classic’s 10th Anniversary year. Here I am with my red Gitane complete with the suicide brakes, reflectors and the small non-standard sized wheels. My Bell helmet is covered with my team lycra cover for the team competition, which I thought made me way less dorky. (Lycra was very new and exciting back then.)

Interview with JHK and Heather Irmiger

Jenn Fields did an great interview of the recently Firecracker 50 winners, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Heather Irmiger, Boulder's husband/wife team. All the content below is from the Daily Camera Story Big Thank you to Jenn and the Daily Camera for the interview!!

This couple has stars and stripes to spare.

Husband and wife pro mountain bikers (and Boulder residents) Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Heather Irmiger went back to the Firecracker 50 on the Fourth of July to defend their titles as the national marathon mountain-biking champions. And they both won their events in the 50-mile race out of Breckenridge again -- despite a flat that let some contenders pass Horgan-Kobelski in the first lap.

They're also the current national champions in cross-country mountain-biking. They'll be defending those titles in just over a week in Granby.

Here's what the couple had to say about hanging onto their titles, how they greeted each other at the finish line and what would've happened at home if only one of them had won.

Q: What's the Firecracker course like?

KoM competition at the Boulder Centurion

News Item:

The Boulder Centurion will have a KoM (King of the Mountains) competition this year so if you fancy yourself a climber? Then take a crack at the Centurion Cycling King of the Mountain Competition. Besides tracking total time, they will also have timing sensors at the start and finish of the first ascent to the Peak-to-Peak Highway. This will determine total elapsed KoM climbing time for all 100-mile event entrants, allowing riders to compare their time against top riders and their friends. After the race they will recognize a men's and women's winner with a special King of the Mountain prize.
