CU Women Continue to Fight for Conference Win

On a race weekend that overlapped with 24-Hours of Moab and the opening of Wolf Creek Ski Resort, many collegiate riders were faced with hard decisions. With the lack of a downhill at the collegiate race hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, many gravity riders chose to take a pass on the weekend. Those in attendance were treated to a fast and flat short track, a world-class dual slalom and a technical cross country that challenged the skills of all levels of riders.

Showing up in force again was the CU women’s endurance team, fielding Katie Sodergren, Claire Bensard, and a newly upgraded Ashlee Wilson. They were paired up against the ever-strong Fort Lewis women’s team consisting of Lauren Catlin, Sarah Sturm, and Anne Cheeney. With team wins in the conference and at National Championships often resting on the performance of the women, all eyes have been watching the Women’s A races intently all season.

In the ST on Saturday morning, Catlin of FLC put on an impressive display of power by riding away from the rest of the field from the start on the relatively flat course. Sodergren and Jill Behlen of Wyoming chased with Sodergren crossing the line in second. Bensard (CU) finished just behind Sturm (FLC) in 5th and 4th, respectivey.

In the XC the following day, tables were turned for the top two women. Catlin and Sodergren stayed glued on each other’s wheel for 3 of the 4 laps and spectators began to expect a sprint finish. Finally, on the final lap, Sodergren was able to open up a small gap and grow it by riding some of the rock features that most of the other women were forced to dismount for. Sturm finished ahead of Bensard in 3rd and 4th.

Coach's Corner - Off Season fitness

From Coach Steve at Tri-ecoach.com

The goal for off-season is to stay fit but not work too hard at it! Your body and head need to recharge, and any physical problems you’ve dealt with in-season need to be resolved before you ramp up next spring. If you’re racing CX this fall you’ll really need a break! =)

Some of us who ‘can’t kick the habit’ still need to do some training every day even though race season is months away, and that’s OK. Skip most or all of your intensity work for a few months. Put in less time. Base fitness will not drop off much if you stay consistent. Attempting to maintain peak fitness through the off-season is not realistic and unwise. For those riders who need complete time off I recommend not going for more than 1-2 weeks with no training.

Reflect on your race season; what could have been better; what can you do to improve going forward? Perhaps your acceleration/sprint is a weakness and you need some time in the gym for core and weight work. Maybe your climbing is not great; you need to race lighter next season, so limiting the overdone holiday feeds is in order. Hit a scale every once in a while to keep it real.

Will Pedal for Food

Families at Heatherwood Elementary Ride Their Bikes and Burleys in Support of Community Food Share.
By AmyT

This past week, Heatherwood Elementary in Boulder hosted its Fall Walk and Roll Week, where children are encouraged to use human-powered transportation to school for one week (think bikes, scooters, skateboards, walking, etc.). To keep the fun level up, Heatherwood had different theme days throughout the week and Wednesday's theme was "Pedal for a Cause". This year the "cause" was a food drive for Community Food Share, which serves Boulder and Broomfield counties. Students were asked to bring a can of food in their backpacks to donate as they rode to school on Wednesday morning. To keep the human-powered transportation theme going, all of the donated food was then loaded into a couple of Burley trailers and two Heatherwood moms rode the donation to Community Food Share's warehouse in Niwot. Fortunately, for these ladies, the nearly five-mile bike ride was mostly downhill! Once at Community Food Share, the food was unloaded into shopping carts and weighed. These moms were both happy and a little shocked to learn that they had just hauled 260 pounds of food by bike and admitted they were probably a tad over the maximum recommended capacity for their trailers, yet all the food, bikes, burleys and moms arrived in tact.

260 Pounds of food donated!
