Most counties in Colorado have adopted the “Model Traffic Code for Colorado” (i.e. CO Title 42) for regulation of vehicles and traffic. You can easily google the MTC to read it. Section 1008 governs following too closely, and section 1008.5 governs crowding or threatening a bicyclist. 1401 and 1402 govern careless/reckless driving. 1412 governs operation of bicycles. 1501-1504 govern motorcycles. (Both 1412 and 1504 discuss attaching oneself to another vehicle, so I don’t suggest as a cyclist holding onto the scooter that’s motorpacing you).

The reference to following another vehicle closely states: “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.”

Notice the code section refers specifically to “the driver of a motor vehicle.” (In Colorado a bicycle is treated as a vehicle for legal purposes –See C.R.S. 42-4-1412(1), “every person riding a bicycle shall have all of the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle under this article…”). One could argue that a cyclist is a vehicle, not a “motor vehicle” and therefore cannot be guilty of following too closely. One could also argue that since the driver of the scooter and the cyclist are working together, and are obeying the laws, staying over to the right side of the road, and able to communicate with one another, that they are acting, “reasonably and prudently.”

Viva Streets - Denver car-free parkway Aug 14th

News Item:

Viva Streets is a one-day celebration that’s made possible when a major Denver street is returned to the people. On August 14, LiveWell Colorado and BikeDenver will transform 23rd Avenue between City Park and Stapleton into a car-free parkway for all Denverites to enjoy. The streets will be closed to cars and will come alive with walkers, bikers, runners, strollers, hoola-hoopers, dancers, paraders, musicians, healthy food purveyors and anyone wanting to play in the streets for the day. It’s a tribute to the power of our city’s streets--to get people moving, to bring neighbors together, and to strengthen Colorado’s healthy, active culture.

There will be lots of fun, healthy activities along the route, see below:

Local Business Highlight - Leg Lube

303Cycling will start a new weekly/bi-monthly series highlighting local cycling businesses in the 303 area. Want to be highlight? It's simple, create a brief elevator speech (like Leg Lube has done) and email it to me at kris at 303cycling dot com. A photo of you, your product or business is strongly encouraged!

LEG LUBE® Founder & President, Austin Baskett, is probably a lot like many of you – a competitor but not a professional.

In 1989 his passion for cycling was brought to a new level after he and a friend biked 5,000 miles down the West coast and across the United States. Since then, he has been an avid cyclist, marathoner and triathlete participating and competing in a multitude of events. It was during this time when he started to notice that there weren’t any products specifically formulated to take care of an athlete’s legs.
"I was participating in all of these events and noticed that everyone around me had shaved legs but there weren't any products being sold by shops that addressed leg care. It seemed like an interesting opportunity." Said Baskett.

Pair that insight with his experience developing products for the beauty industry (V.P. of Marketing for American Crew, Modern Organic Products, d:fi and others) and the result is LEG LUBE® – the first brand dedicated to caring for athletes legs. The company launched its first product, LEG LUBE® Performance Shave Gel, in June and has received positive reviews from Bicycling Magazine, Slowtwitch.com and others.
"We formulated the product to be unique. One of the coolest things about our shave gel is that you can shave in-or-out of the shower with it. I don't know of any other product that you can do this with." Said Baskett. "We also designed the scent to appeal to both men and women and to travel easily. The packaging is TSA approved and won't leak which is great for many athletes."

“Performance is at the core of everything that we do. Great ingredients delivering an awesome user experience." Said Baskett. "It is really gratifying to see so many people loving the product and that has been our goal from the start."
LEG LUBE® Performance Shave Gel can be purchased online or at many running, cycling and multisport shops throughout Colorado. Visit leglube.com to find the closest retailer near you.

Your team Culture & Goals - What are they

From my mail box this morning

I'm new to Boulder and am looking for a local team to ride for. Any recommendations for an ambitious cat 3 looking to race aggressively and upgrade soon?

For some the road season is over or nearing the end leaving them to tally their score cards and review how it went for themselves as a rider and how they worked with their team (or lack of one). This is the common time of year when riders start looking for new teams to join but how do you find the right team?.
