From Mountain Flyer Magazine

Eighteen adventurous souls rolled out of Ned last Saturday morning to tackle the ambitious and tricky HalfAss. Front Range locals, David Weber, Rob Batey, Paul Maude, Owen Murphy, Chuck Ray and a few others, formed a group at the front of the ride, but even with local knowledge, detailed maps and GPS technology, a few wrong turns where made. The slow and demanding HalfAss course had the riders’ full attention.

From Yahoo Sports

PARIS (AFP) – Tributes were paid on Tuesday to former two-time Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon who died following a battle with cancer.

The French rider, who had been suffering from cancer of the digestive system, passed away in the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in Paris at the age of 50 years.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy hailed "an extraordinary and exceptional champion who will forever go down in the history of the Tour de France, in French cycling."

Fignon won the Tour de France in 1983 and 1984, and was runner-up in 1989 when he lost by just eight seconds, the smallest margin in the history of the race, to American Greg LeMond.

Dear Casey community and beyond,

The Casey Middle School Bike Club is selling cycling jerseys to the community to help raise money for our activities. The jerseys are high-quality Belgian-made Vermarc jerseys with an original retro design (see attached). Casey Bike Club is growing and it is important that we continue to make this activity available to students of all backgrounds. The money helps pay for camping trips, one-day mountain bike excursions, use of the indoor cycling track (velodrome) in the winter, racing licenses and uniforms for students who cannot pay the activity fee. Please consider buying one of these sweet jerseys for yourselves, your children and your friends. Show your Casey pride whenever you ride!

To order, please print, fill out and return the attached order form to Ms. Powers with a check. Right now, we are only ordering jerseys but if there is a lot of interest in shorts, we might consider ordering some.

PLEASE HAVE YOUR ORDERS IN BY SEPTEMBER 17!

Thanks so much for your support!

Boulder's Garmin adds women's cycling team

By John Henderson
The Denver Post

Now that newly named Team Garmin-Cervelo has a women's team, CEO Jonathan Vaughters has his sights on one of the best female cyclists in the world. And he only has to go up the road to find her: Boulder's Mara Abbott.

Vaughters said he is interested in Abbott, the Fairview High grad who won the Giro d'Italia Femminile (Giro Donne) in June.

"She's impressive," Vaughters said. "I don't know if she has a contract for 2011. You never know for 2012."

Turns out, the 24-year-old is signed with HTC-Columbia only through December. She has not signed anything for next year.

"If he's interested, he should call me," Abbott said Sunday.

Asked if she's interested in Garmin-Cervelo, which is based in Boulder, Abbott said, "I'll go into that with him."

Garmin-Cervelo already has a top woman rider from the previous Swiss-based Cervelo team, most of which is expected to remain intact under the Garmin umbrella. Vaughters calls Britain's Emma Pooley, who has won a couple of World Cup races and whom he saw win La Fleche Wallonne in Belgium, "one of the best if not the best in the world."

The women's team is Cervelo's inspiration, and it gave Vaughters the financial wherewithal to do it when the bike company replaced Felt as a team sponsor.

THE BICYCLE FILM FESTIVAL TURNS 10!
The BFF, touring 37 cities Worldwide, Celebrates 10 Years Bicycle Art, Film, & Culture with
Three Days of Events in Denver September 9-11

DENVER (September 2010) – From September 9-11, we invite you to take part in one of the most culturally relevant movements of the past decade – the urban bike movement.

We are proud to announce the Bicycle Film Festival’s second year in Denver, and the tenth anniversary of the international Bicycle Film Festival. In tandem with the growth in urban cycling, the BFF has spread all over the world to 40 cities from its roots in New York City into a multi- faceted, international event that travels from Milan to Tokyo, Minneapolis to Sydney.
In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience it inspired him to create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its tenth year the festival is held in 37 cities worldwide.

Will Boulder Step Up - Quiznos Pro Challenge Cycling

Just saw this in the Daily Camera. I really hope Boulder steps up and takes the risk of hosting a stage.

SEAN MAHER: Stepping up for the cycling 'Challenge'

Sean Maher, For the Camera
Posted: 08/21/2010 03:12:07 PM MDT

A few weeks ago, cycling fans in Boulder got a big thrill when Lance Armstrong unveiled the Quiznos Pro Challenge starting in August of next year. This new race will bring world-class professional cycling back to Colorado for the first time since 1988 when the Coors Classic folded.

It's about time.

Colorado (specifically Boulder) is the center of U.S. cycling. Top riders from around the world travel here to train. More professional cyclists live here than anywhere else in the country.

If a major cycling event should happen anywhere, this is the place. So, of course, Boulder will play a major role in the new race -- right?

Not necessarily. Aside from Denver, race organizers have not committed to any other venues in the state. While they want to come to Boulder, it is not a given that we will get one of the six available stages.

The reason is money. Cycling races are expensive. Police, road closures, EMTs, trash removal, hotel rooms and team meals are just some of what has to be paid for. The cost for a one-day stage in Boulder could run $300,000.

Boulder businesses, clubs and individuals have the opportunity to put their name on a moving billboard! Middle Cross Bike Clubs has received a grant from the city to purchase a trailer and a fleet of cyclocross bikes to be used by Bike Clubs around the city at clinics, scrimmages and races. We are asking supporters of youth cycling to contribute to complete the fleet of bikes. For a donation of $500, you can buy a Redline Cross Bike and trick it out with your name and logos. The bike would be yours to decorate as you see fit and Bike Club kids would make you famous, riding the bike for training and races. Please consider making this worthwhile contribution to youth cycling. For more information, contact Mike Eubank at
