Portions of this story came from BikeDenver with permission

Denver Bike Share is launching April 22 and they need your help! Bike sharing could change the landscape of how many commute to work and be there when change is born by volunteering for Denver Bike Share.

Apply right now to be a Denver B-Cycle Launch Volunteer! Submit your application by clicking this link: Volunteer Application for Denver B-Cycle Launch Days

This is a high-profile short term volunteer opportunity to assist the City of Denver and Denver Bike Sharing in the launch of Denver B-Cycle, Denver’s new bike sharing program. Deadline to apply is April 6th.

What will I be doing? You and other volunteers will be stationed at one of 35 B-Cycle kiosks located in and around Denver. There will be 2 volunteers at each kiosk three times a day during the morning, lunchtime and late afternoon. You’ll be showing people how to operate the B-Cycle bikes and kiosks, talking about the benefits of bicycling and bike-sharing, and giving out information on how to sign up or how to get around town via bike. See the map of kiosk locations here.

ATTENTION BOULDER COUNTY CYCLISTS!!

Boulder County is starting off the 2010 construction season with a bang, as we replace two bridges along popular cycling routes! Both bridges are expected to be open to traffic by the end of June with improved facilities for cyclists.

In the meantime, both the 95th Street bridge south of Pike Road in Longmont and the Niwot Road Bridge over the Feeder Canal will be closed to all traffic. Cyclists are urged to use caution around both projects, especially the Niwot Road Bridge Project which will detour all traffic to gravel roads.

Niwot Road CLOSED at the Boulder Feeder Canal. April 5 - June 15. Niwot Road will be closed at the Boulder Feeder Canal (between 55th and 63rd) starting Monday April 5, to allow for the replacement of the Feeder Canal Bridge. The new bridge will maintain the current two-lane configuration along with road shoulders to provide increased safety for bicycles and pedestrians. The closure is expected to last through June 15. No vehicle access will be permitted during closure. All traffic will be detoured along 55th Street and Monarch Road, both of which are gravel surfaced.

95th Street CLOSED south of Pike Road (City of Longmont). April 12 - June 22. 95th Street will be closed to all vehicles from Pike Road to Pintail Drive to allow for the replacement of the 95th Street Bridge over Lefthand Creek. The new bridge will include bike lanes and a multi-use path across the creek as well as provide for a trail crossing underneath the structure. The bridge is anticipated to be open to traffic on June 22, with construction continuing through the beginning of August.

All schedules are subject to change due to weather or other mitigating factors. More specific information on each project will be provided as it becomes known. Updates are available on the county website: www.BoulderCounty.org/transportation

Please use caution when riding and remember, "Courtesy is Contagious"!!!!

Boulder Hardcourt Bike Polo

News Item:

We have talked about bike polo before but that was on grass. Hardcourt bike polo is coming to Boulder. From Boulder Hardcourt Website

April 11. 2010. 2pm

Foothills Community Park – roller hockey rinks

hardcourt bike polo is coming to boulder, co. on 4/11/10, we are organizing folks to come up from denver (Denver Mallet Mafia) and perhaps a few people from colorado springs (Peak Region Polo) to give boulder a taste of what hardcourt bicycle polo is all about. we will provide mallets and objects to strike so just bring a bike that you won’t be losing sleep over should a stray mallet/ball/foot try and occupy the same bit of space-time.

but wait, what is hardcourt bike polo…?

hardcourt bike polo is team sport typically played 3 on 3. the object of the game is to score on the opposing team’s goal. goals are scored by hitting the ball (typcially a roller-hockey ball) off the round/disk end(s) of the mallet; anything that goes off the long side of the mallet is considered a “shuffle” and doesn’t count. goals are typically cones or a hockey-sized goal/net. players can ride on any type of bicycle they prefer, but if their foot touches the ground during play (whether accidental or forced) they are out-of-play until they tap back in, at a designated object or point on the court. courts vary in size and shape and are usually dependent on what’s available. having fixed “boards” or a boundary to the court greatly facilitates in continuous play. in boulder we are lucky enough to have a public park that includes two little-used roller hockey courts which turns out to be an ideal size for polo.

Colorado Cycling Events - Dont Get Fooled April 1st

News Item:

What do the Triple Bypass, the Leadville 100 MTB race and The Growler all have in common other than being a some times humbling experience? They all sold out very quickly and in some cases the first day of registration. The big races / events / tours are filling up faster and faster. If you are not prepared to register when registration opens, you could miss out.

We created pages for each event with alternatives that have similar features and have not yet filled up. (Although, even some of the alternative events are now full! The Growler is an example.) We have the Triple Bypass Alternatives and Leadville 100 MTB Alternatives pages. Lets hope we don't have to create another page this Thursday. Of course we're prepared to do so.

Assault on Pikes Peak

News Item:

There are sixty six 14ers in the Continental US and fifty four of those are in Colorado, but amazingly enough only one has allowed you to ride a bike to the top - until this year.

Most everyone knows of the Bob Cook Memorial - Mt Evans Hill Climb but this year you have the opportunity to ride to the top of Pikes Peak. The new event is called Assault on the Peak.

We were contacted about this event a couple weeks ago and the buzz continues to grow. I just saw an article in the The Gazzette that gave a little more information.

From the article:

There are other races to the top of the peak, including the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon – on foot – and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb – in vehicles. But there has not been a bicycle race since the early 2000s, when the Pikes Peak Mountain Bike Challenge, a race on the upper few miles of the highway, ended.

North Boulder Park Criterium

News Item:

Description: North Boulder Criterium is a Colorado cycling iconic race. For many years this race served as finishing race in the Red Zinger Bike Race. While this doesn't the the award for oldest race in Colorado, City Park in Denver has that, this one probably has the most exposure and attendance than any other race. Starting in 1974 this race has see a lot of great racing though the course of the first to decades was larger than the one used today [Anyone know the official old course?]. This race truly symbolizes Colorado bike racing and those show respect for it's history Boulder will be constructing a North Boulder Park Monument plan to start construction in summer of 2010. This was the race that Davis Phinney watched as a 16yr and knew this was the sport for him. At the height of it's popularity, it was said that as many as 300,000 people descended upon North Boulder Park to witness the Men's and Women's Pro Races.
