Deadly Intersection in Boulder Critically Injures Cyclist

News Item:

According to the Daily Camera and Facebook, Terence 'T.J.' Doherty was critically injured as he was riding his bike on hwy 36 (28th street) and was struck by a car traveling west on 36 and turned left onto Violet. Sadly, from what is being posted on Facebook, the cyclist has passed away.

From the DailyCamera

Trooper Nate Reid said the cyclist was riding about 5 p.m. Sunday on Violet Avenue north of Boulder when a Volvo station wagon headed west on U.S. 36 turned left onto Violet and hit him. The driver of the Volvo, Kirk Condon, 59, didn't see him, Reid said.

Condon was ticketed on suspicion of careless driving. Reid said the charges may be amended if the victim dies

This very same intersection took the life of another cyclist in September 2009. Maybe it's time to take a study of safety at this intersection.

Neva / Niwot Construction Starts Week of July 30

News Item:

Attn: Boulder County Cyclists!!
Neva Road and Niwot Road will be under construction between US36 (Foothills Highway) and North 63rd Street starting July 30 and lasting through the end of November.

Boulder County is reconstructing the roadway and adding four-foot shoulders to the entire length of road. The road is expected to remain open to all traffic including cyclists for the majority of the project, however cyclists should expect variable road surfaces including milled asphalt and dirt-road conditions; lane closures; and significant delays, when using this road for the duration of the project timeline. Some daytime road closures are anticipated.

Our current schedule has construction completed by the end of November. However weather may very well cause the final portions of the project to be delayed until Spring 2013. Once completed, road conditions should be significantly improved over the current situation. Our hope is that the addition of shoulders will make this route safer to use and more enjoyable for a broad range of cyclists and other road users.

Boulder County will be providing updates on construction as the project moves forward. Please reply to this email if you’d like to be added to that project specific email notification list.

Please use caution when riding and remember, "Courtesy is Contagious"!!!!

30,000 spectator cap proposed for Flagstaff's Stage 6 finish

News Item:

How will cycling crazed fans of Boulder and Colorado be tamed on Stage 6 in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge? One of the methods proposed will be to limit the number of spectators on Flagstaff mountain. Officials are probably looking to prevent the chaos that apparently happened on Lookout Mountain's segment of last year's USA Pro Challenge. Wonder how much these free wristbands will sell for on the internet once someone gets their hands on them?

From the Daily Camera

The Boulder City Council on Tuesday will consider a recommendation by the city's Open Space Board of Trustees to limit the number of spectators on Flagstaff Mountain to 30,000. Under the plan, free wristbands would be distributed in advance of the Aug. 25 stage, with a maximum of five given out to any one person.
