Future of Mountain Biking in the Front Range?

News Item:

Found this interesting article on how freeriding might become the future of MTB. Here are some quotes from the article..

"Freeriding is also accessible. With the US and Canada seeing increasing urbanization (and suburbanization) it’s becoming more and more difficult to site and build large scale mountain bike trail networks. Freeride courses, on the other hand, can be much more compact since stunts can be combined in different ways each time around the course. Freeride stunts can even be found indoors at places like Rays Indoor MTB Park and kids who live in cities can use urban or trials rides to hone freeriding skills."

Yes, that is true, even with the ever powerful IMBA and BMA Boulder still has to fight HARD to get more trail access however finding spots like the CU Research Park are popping up more often(east boulder, gunbarrel, Denver, etc). The Boulder Velodrome just recently opened up their mountain bike terrain section. The Valmont Park IS getting built and then there is a rumored Denver Mountain Bike Park

The Heat is on up in Fort Collins

News Item:

Got this today from Bike Fort Collins. While it is unfortunate that he ran the stop sign but here is his experience of the Fort Collins police.

“I got a ticket Sunday afternoon from a
Larimer Co sheriff's deputy for riding through the 4-way stop near my
house at Lemay and Country Club Drive (there were no cars at the
intersection, except the cop who was apparently following me at a bit
of a distance) and I was floored when he pulled me over and ticketed
me. Said the fine had gone up in May to $110 and that I should watch
out because "it's gonna heat up in the next few months." I hadn't a
clue what he meant and was more focused on trying to keep my temper,
but I'm assuming he was threatening some sort of crackdown on riders. I
found the whole thing ludicrous, though I feel stupid for not checking
behind me. I didn't realize the police here would issue tickets for an
action that creates no hazard to anyone, but I should have known
better, after reading a few articles about Alderden and the "elite
Boulder cyclists" last year.
Anyway, just wanted to warn folks, if it wasn't already common
knowledge, that our local sheriff's department is looking for revenue
from cyclists quite aggressively these days.”

Thanks to Bike Fort Collins for sending us this, here is what they had to say

"Hello everyone -
This email is to ask for your support again. Colorado State Senator Greg Brophy ( R) and Dan Gibbs (D) are sponsoring Senate Bill 148. The Bicycle Safety Bill clarifies rules governing bicyclists riding 2 abreast, staying to the right-hand side of the roadway when possible, and using right-turn lanes. Specifies that a driver must allow at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist, and creates a limited exception to the prohibition on driving left of center to allow drivers to give bicyclists extra room. Prohibits harassment of bicyclists, with enhanced penalties for harassment when perpetrated by: driving a vehicle in a threatening manner, or throwing an object from a moving vehicle.
