Great family event this weekend with a bike rodeo for the kids with the help from Raisin Hope Foundation. But this event is more than just about being fun, it helps to get a very important message across to our youth and that is cycling safety. As we all know, cycling can be done safely but when it goes terrible wrong the media jumps all over it making cycling sound dangerous and keeping parents (like mine) from preventing kids from riding their bikes around as transportation.

Yesterday 303Cycling reported on the bad reputation we get when Boulder cyclist ride on sidewalks, now today its on to the group rides. The Daily Camera ran a story today about the sheriff's new cycling liaison group to help reduce tension between cyclist and drivers. 303Cycling had known about this group was unable to publish it yet for various reasons. The story in the paper is lots of interesting quotes and I'm sure within hours the comments will be near a 100. Here are some of the quotes from the story..

"They've also been following large packs of cyclists for several weeks, Pelle said, evaluating what the biggest problems are and how certain groups are giving other riders a bad name."

"We're looking at very specific things that can be done to reduce tensions, whether it's sweeping the streets more frequently or better signage," he said. "We want to do some practical things."

Cyclist on Sidewalks create bad reputation

In the opinion section of the DailyCamera today a reader is lashing out at cyclist riding on the sidewalk. The problem is bound to happen given so many unaware cyclist, many who's last time on a bike was at age 13 and then they only road on the sidewalks.

Cyclists on sidewalks are pedestrians

I am a cyclist in Boulder, but I am also a driver, and today I almost hit a cyclist who emerged into my path from a hidden sidewalk. The cyclist yelled at me. I would like to point out to cyclists that the Colorado Department of Transportation has the following rule for cyclists riding on the sidewalk

"A person riding or walking a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall have all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances." CDOT has the following duty for pedestrians who come to a cross walk, even a cross walk with a "walk" sign: "Before crossing, stop at the curb, edge of the road, or corner before proceeding. Look left-right-left and over your shoulder for turning vehicles. If it's clear, begin crossing."

Ryan rides in Missoura on the Katy Trail

Ryan is now in Missoura and he is on the MKT/Katy Trail which is an old railroad line converted into a walking/biking path and it is sweet. It is partly this path that got me into cycling, I would drive to the trail head after working at the bike shop and ride like all beginners, at warp speed (like 16mph) for 20 minutes and turn around. Be sure to follow Ryan on his adventure and help donate to his cause.

Amid the controversy over a proposed charity bicycle event on Deer Creek Canyon Road, the Jeffco commissioners will propose state legislation that would give them more authority to bar cyclists from some county roads altogether.

Conflict between motorists and cyclists is nothing new on the canyon roads west of South Jeffco in the foothills. But a recent battle over using a portion of Deer Creek Canyon Road for a September fund-raising event has spurred the commissioners to seek broader authority in making some roads off limits to cyclists. The county attorney's office will draft the legislation soon, and the county will try to get a legislator to sponsor it in the 2010 legislative session.

"This morning the board recognized that we have severe issues in Deer Creek Canyon and in other areas," Commissioner Kevin McCasky said June 30 at a hearing on whether the September cycling event would receive a special-use permit.
