Folks are also encouraged to donate cycling equipment for the kids. Pedals, shoes, helmets and smaller sized clothing is very helpful
This events is a blend of my two worlds... geeks and bikes! Some great local tech companies like Gnip, Lijit, Filtrbox, Techstars, are hosting a networking meeting at the Boulder Draft House this Friday from 4pm -6pm. Meet the two guys behind Real Geeks Ride and help the cycling students of Casey Middle School by making a donation, Catherine Powers will be there to personally thank everyone helping them out!

About Real Geeks who ride...

This ride across the USA, and the months leading up to it, is about their transition from ‘geeks’ into ‘geeks with bikes’. They will be showing, through realgeeksride.com and various forms of social media, the challenges, myths, and culture of cycling, the way a geek would understand them.

Through their example, they hope to inspire (or potentially force) other geeks to change their commuting habits. If these two geeks can make it across the USA, it is foolish to think other geeks can not at least bike to work.

Valmont Bike Park gets $200,000 grant

News Item:

From the Valmont Blog this morning

We are thrilled to announce that Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) has awarded $200,000 to Boulder Parks & Recreation for construction at the Valmont Bike Park (VBP). Forty-five applications were submitted requesting more than $7 million - so VBP was among some pretty tough competition!

Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (BMA) played an integral role in the grant application, and our partnership with City of Boulder Parks & Recreation Department helped strengthen the proposal immensely. The community support for a bike park at Valmont, as well as more than $150,000 in individual donations from over 500 people and businesses also made our application competitive in GOCO's process.

This generous grant from GOCO will bring us much closer to the vision of a world-class bike park at Valmont City Park. This grant will be used to supplement the City's construction budget to help build a cutting-edge bike park, and also help us seek additional funding from local foundations that hold GOCO's decisions in high regard.
