JHK - Leadville 100 MTB Plan

Found this video on Singletrack.com of Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (JHK) and his plans and thoughts about racing the Leadville 100 MTB race.

Having raced only a single 100-mile competition, which by the way wasn’t the Leadville Trail 100, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski has a few thoughts about his coming foray above 10,200 feet on Saturday — like not blowing up.
Horgan-Kobelski, who normally races cross-country for the Subaru-Trek Mountain Bike Team, won the Bailey Hundo in Colorado last June, so he’s not a total greenhorn when it comes to endurance events. And he’s also won the 50-mile long mountain bike marathon national championships two years running.

The BBC slams Boulder

The BBC recently slammed Boulderites claiming they The people of Boulder are just as wedded to their cars as they are anywhere else in America.

They are right and they are wrong.

They are wrong because places in middle America don't even come CLOSE to having an infrastructure to support cycling like Boulder or Denver has. The lack of urban decay and the infrastructure to support citizens to get around bike bike creates an environment making cycling a no brainer in this town. There are also many who have elected (through concious choice not because of $$) to go Car-less. And on any given weekend day you will be hard bound to find a place on some of Boulder's roads to NOT see a cyclist.

Do you think the BBC is right?

Denver cyclist/doctor takes sabbatical in Portand

From BikeDenver.org

Eric packed up for the journey west!

Interesting story on a Denver physican who will be taking a two month sabbatical in Portand to identify the key steps a community can take to increase bike ridership. I hope to come back to Denver with a clearer picture of what local bike enthusiasts should be working on in order to have a meaningful impact on ridership..

The story goes on to say...

As a physician, I often get funny looks when I speak to people about my interest in transportation issues – doesn’t sound very medical. Truth is, there are few things as important for the health of our citizens than how we build our cities.

Is Dead Dog Dying?

I saw this on the ACA forum late last week:

Registration closed last night. There are only 325 racing. Not sure why we are down about 100 registered racers from last year. SM Pro-1-2 field is slim with only 25. Last year we had just over 60 register. Maybe they are all at nationals? Anyway, weather is looking pretty good and we hope to have a good race!

This to me is very interesting when other events fill up with days. The Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race filled up immediately and so have many of the Leadville 100 Alternatives. The Triple ByPass has become extremely popular and filled up in less than a day! Yeah I know you might say well these are mountain bike events and a long one day tour and Dead Dog is a road stage race. Well, The Front Range Mountain Bike Series cancelled there last few racers due to low turn out. Here is what they said:

Interview with North Boulder Park Classic Promoter

Recently we caught up with race promoter, Keith Harper and Donna Shaw and talked to them about the 2010 North Boulder Park Classic Race. For those who may be new to cycling or the state, learn more about the long great history the North Boulder Park Criterium Race has.

[303Cycling] North Boulder Crit has a new name, new website and new face behind the curtain, tell us what big changes will we see in 2010?

Well, for one the race has a new title sponsor -- Flatiron Subaru. In addition we have a bunch of supporting sponsors who have stepped up to sponsor the individual races. For instance, Juwi Solar is sponsoring the Women's Pro-1-2-3 race and The Pro's Closet is sponsoring the the Men's Masters 35+ race. Each category (10 races) has a sponsor. It's been great! The response from the business community has been really positive. This means there's actually a decent cash prize list for each race which I'm really psyched about. Every category deserves a good race and a good race has a respectable prize list! Oh, and primes -- There'll be lots of prime sprints in each race -- the prime prizes are pouring in from the business that missed out on primary sponsorship.

Also, we're raising money for the Davis Phinney Foundation and Bikes for Humanity -- two really important non-profit organizations with ties to Boulder and the park itself. (Here, watch Davis win at NBP in this video).

[303Cycling]This race has a great spectator history but the last decade it has become more of a racers race, will you all be doing anything special to cater to spectators?

Wines of the Tour de France

At 303Cycling we suspect that many cyclists enjoy their wine as much as we do. We caught up with Trent Shaoul of Ace Liquors in Boulder to discuss their promotion for "Wines of the Tour de France" for 2010. He and one of his importers, David Bond, gave us the scoop on some great wines that correspond to some exciting stages this year:

[303Cycling] Stage 7, Sat July 10th, will go thru the Beaujolais region. Cyclists and spectators can expect 6 categorized climbs - Three category 2s, two category 3s and a 4 to ensure there is no flat terrain. You can cheer on your favorite because it's anybody's stage. And what else can we expect from Beaujolais?
The Beaujolais region looks much like Burgundy; rolling hills, medieval villages, and thousands of vineyards and small producers. Being a little further south than Burgundy, the cuisine is a little lighter, better for the warmer climate and the fruitier wines. In terms of cuisine, its still the French classics (red meats, game, lamb) but more of an emphasis on grilled meats, lighter vegetable dishes and a lot of pork sausage. Some of the more famous local dishes are boiled or grilled sausage dishes (diot). The Beaujolais region is great for watching the tour. A bottle of Beaujolais, some sunshine and a nice picnic of local cheeses, salads, fruits and cured meats (dry salami, ham, etc..) is perfect for waiting for the riders to show up.

Centurion the next revolution in American Cycling?

The very first Colorado Centurion is a little over a month away and already the starting list is pretty big. A few months ago we interviewed Centurion Cycling, worth reading to get a general understanding of what this is all about.

Think it's a tour, well maybe, a race, sort of. If it's a tour then it is one of the most stacked tour fields I've every seen (see for your self), but the field is big enough that I'm doubt this will feel like any race I've ever done. Here is how Centurion Cycling defines whether it is a race or a ride

Is Centurion Cycling a race or a ride?

The short answer is both. It’s up to you to decide how you ride. We’ll position riders who want to race at the front of our giant peloton, with those who are just riding to finish further back. Either way, your official time starts when you — and the provided timing chip attached to your bike’s fork — cross the start line. Think of it like the New York City Marathon. Some competitors are there to win (or at least beat all their buddies). Others just want to line up in a prestigious event, ride with friends and set a personal best time. Or maybe you’re simply riding for the satisfaction of saying, “I did it! I rode 100 miles!” It’s totally up to you.

This just in... not a joke...

From Daily Camera

Boulder police are looking for a man suspected of robbing a coffee shop at 4:35 p.m. Sunday.

Someone at the coffee shop in the 2600 block of Broadway called police after an employee confronted the suspect in the manager's office, according to Boulder police. The suspect fled the store out a back door and rode west on Alpine Avenue on a red full-suspension mountain bike, police said.

Staff members later discovered that money was missing from a cash drawer in the manager's office, according to police.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. He had black hair, was clean cut and had shaved legs. He was wearing a blue polo-style shirt, khaki pants and new blue and white shoes.

Anyone with information about the crime can call officer Patrick Vest at 303-441-3482. To remain anonymous, contact Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ACA Women's Mentoring Program - Racer Interview

After the Wheels of Thunder race last Saturday we reached out to women cyclists and Lori Emerson was kind enough to answer and share her experience with 303Cycling. We asked her a few questions and here are her answers.

[303Cycling] How did you get into cycling and how did you make the jump to racing?
[Lori] I long wanted to get into cycling - nothing matches the feeling of freedom you get from riding a bike. I started out by buying touring bikes with my husband about eight years ago and I just used mine to take long bike rides around Grand Island and Buffalo, NY. In my mind, I was training for a mythical bike tour across the US that we wanted to take.

I then moved to Atlanta, GA and decided that I would try triathlon, partly to stay fit and partly to meet people. I did a couple triathlons on the touring bike, all the while knowing that that I just wanted to save up some money, buy a road bike, and focus my energies on cycling.
