FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 17, 2009)—USA Cycling has announced the first round of nominations to the United States National Team for the 2010 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic, Jan. 30-31.

Five athletes were named to each of the elite women’s, U23 men’s and junior men’s squads based on competitive performances over the course of the last year.

After capturing her sixth consecutive USA Cycling Cylco-cross National title and winning a pair of World Cups this season, Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Planet Bike) received an automatic nomination and will lead the elite women’s squad. Compton is currently the top-ranked female cyclo-crosser in the world rankings ahead of Dutchwomen Daphny van den Brand and reigning world champion Marianne Vos. After her silver-medal-performance at the World Championships in 2006 and earning the bronze at last year’s contest, Compton is not only an automatic qualifier to the squad, but will be the favorite heading into Tabor.

Boulder Winter Bike to Work Day

Reminder, tomorrow is Winter Bike to Work Day! Much like the very popular Bike to Work Day which usually takes place in June, this one happens in winter. Contrary to belief, biking in winter is easier than one might think. With the exception of Blizzard days, crazy cold or evil wind day, its pretty easy with usually the hardest task of not getting your body to work but you stuff and that holds true just as much in the summer. The weather forecast looks good however there might be some snow on the ground Wednesday, but have little fear, many will see just how well the city keeps many of its bike paths free over the winter.

TONIGHT...MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW. LOWS
IN THE LOWER 20S.
WEDNESDAY...PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS AROUND 40.

When:
On Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 GO Boulder is hosting its second annual Winter Bike to Work Day. The day will include free breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the locations listed below.

Upcoming Toll Road Leaves Bikes Behind

News Item:

http://shop-staging.soundstrue.com/

Thanks to a 303cycling reader, Jason Callegari, for writing up this story. If you have a story you want to share, drop us a line or two. Thanks Jason!!

On Wednesday December 16th, The Denver Regional Council of Governors (DRCOG) will meet to hear testimony regarding the planned Toll Road between Arvada and Broomfield.  The proposed Toll Road will have its largest impact on the Arvada, Golden, Boulder, Superior and Broomfield communities.  This is not a new debate, however it is a new opportunity for voices from the bike community to be heard.

Your action is needed, please read the entire story

Much of the debate over the Toll Road centers around proposed economic development.  In these tough economic times, it is important that communities seek new solutions to bolster their economic security, however the Toll Road is neither the only nor the best option.

Why do bicycles continue to be left behind?  If tax payer money needs to be used -and the current proposal calls for up to 1 billion in tax payer money- then we need a multi modal design that takes into account pedstrian, bicycle, RTD and cars - serving everyone's needs.  The proposed toll road does not do this (they would only set aside some right-of-way for someone else to build in the future) . Its proponents acknowledge that it would cause increased congestion on S.H. 93 and Indiana St.  If you bike or drive Highway 93 you know that it has little to no shoulder, tight curves, no split median, plenty of wildlife crossings and frequent snow closures. Funding the proposed Toll Road would not leave any funds left to address these important issues.

County Finalizes Lefthand Canyon's Plan

News Item:

Looks like the county finalized their plan to reduce cyclist vs car tension in the Boulder Canyons, primarily Lefthand Canyon. Not much new to report from when we last reported on the Lefthand Canyon's Workgroup. For those who have not been following this story the county has created a workgroup consisting of residents (both cyclist and not) of Jamestown and Lefthand Canyon and cyclist from the Boulder Community to come together and discuss the problems at hand and possible solutions. We attended the workgroup's presentation about a month ago and we were VERY surprised by the level of tension in the group and it's negative attitude towards cyclist, below are a list of common complaints heard that evening
  • cyclist riding at dusk with no lights or reflective clothing
  • Loud conversational talking as riders enter Jamestown in the morning
  • High number of cycling events in the canyon

Friday Fun - Bad Race Kits

News Item:

It was hard to wait until Friday but the recent release of Team Radio Shack's race kits are getting a lot of bad press. Joe Lindsey recently ran a humorous story listing Team Radio Shack's jersey up with other great bad team kits... now Lance needs to get a Mullet like Brochard did. Local teams have had some pretty bad kits, my favorite is a local team that has a white and grey kit that under some circumstances is very sheer in the bib... not hot. Also the seasame street jersey... really, who buys those? And my favorite was my 1995 University of Missouri jersey we wore at MTB Nats, a sister of the team made them by hand in the car on the way to Colorado, but we weren't the worst, some school in NM had T-shirts that were hand painted, probably intoxicated too. What past team jerseys have you seen are just plain bad?

More Natz chatter. We posted this awhile back but it will be the last hurrah as the season slips (slides) away.
