Mountain Biking at the Boulder Velodrome with kids

News Item:

Few weeks ago the Colorado Daily put up a story on how the Velodrome is not just for pros and as a regular resident of the velodrome myself last year I saw some of the mountain bike park grow up but rarely saw folks using it. Then in the last 4 months or so there seems to be a large increase of parents telling of such wonderful experiences their kids have had at the velodrome with either their Cycle Tykes program or kids birthday parties... I had to go check this out. So a few nights ago my 8yr son and I loaded up my redneck truck and headed to the Boulder Velodrome for do some open riding on the mountain bike section. In short to skip all the words below it was GREAT!

Community Cycles "Great Kids Bike Giveaway" a success... sort of

News Item:

Community Cycles is sending out a thanks and a request to all for the success of the recent Great Kids Bike Giveaway and a request for filling in the gaps from the donations received from the bike give away. They are a 501c so your donations are tax deductible!

Donating to Community Cycles

Thanks to many many volunteer and staff hours, we gave away almost 300 bikes last week. It was a blast of an event. Many families got bikes, and many kids had a great holiday gift waiting for them as a result.

We had an original goal of a suggested donation of $20 per bike, with no one being turned away for lack of funds. In the end, we raised about $3 per bike.

If you're counting bikes given away, it was a huge success. If you're counting money raised from the event, we're a little short of our goal.

If you are in a position to donate something to help us offset the cost of getting these bikes ready with new tires, new parts, and lots of love, please donate today. You can donate directly on our website, or just make a check out to Community Cycles and drop it in the mail.

If you still have end-of-year donations to make, please consider helping Community Cycles and our work.

You can see a video about the giveaway, and some of the bikes and kids in action here from a Channel 4 news story here:

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 17, 2009)—USA Cycling has announced the first round of nominations to the United States National Team for the 2010 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic, Jan. 30-31.

Five athletes were named to each of the elite women’s, U23 men’s and junior men’s squads based on competitive performances over the course of the last year.

After capturing her sixth consecutive USA Cycling Cylco-cross National title and winning a pair of World Cups this season, Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Planet Bike) received an automatic nomination and will lead the elite women’s squad. Compton is currently the top-ranked female cyclo-crosser in the world rankings ahead of Dutchwomen Daphny van den Brand and reigning world champion Marianne Vos. After her silver-medal-performance at the World Championships in 2006 and earning the bronze at last year’s contest, Compton is not only an automatic qualifier to the squad, but will be the favorite heading into Tabor.
