Last Thursday evening 303Cycling headed to Denver's Paramount Theater for the premiere of Citizen Picture's Race Across The Sky - 2010 Leadville Trail 100. Several cycling celebrities were in attendance including, Allen Lim, Davis and Taylor Phinney and Heather Irmiger to name a few.

The event started with a panel discussion, led by Dave Towle and featuring Bahram Akradi, Levi Leipheimer, Dave Weins, Rebecca Rush, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Erik Weihenmayer. Bakram is the CEO of Lifetime Fitness and the new keeper of the Leadville races vowed to maintain the spirit of the Trail 100. Levi said that at times he "cursed the man that got him into it" and Dave Weins felt motivated by the stories from the evening probably as much as he has motivated others. Rebecca didn't need to say anything as Dave Towle announced that she broke the long standing women's course record from 1997 and beat John Stamstad's 1994 time. JHK humbly let the crowd know he wants to see his name on the winner's list. And Erik's humor and accomplishment of the only blind person to summit Everest was both disarming and motivating.

Humble, appreciative, and down-to-earth are not normal characteristics associated with modern athletes. Golden, Colorado resident, Kelly Magelky, is not your normal modern athlete. His hard work and positive attitude have paved the way to becoming one of the top endurance racers in professional mountain biking while building his own production company. He is dedicated to becoming the best in both worlds and is a true “nice guy” of the mountain biking world.

As a proud member of the Trek Team for the last three seasons, Kelly feels that the experience has helped to “shape his cycling career into an experience that (he) would have never dreamed of.” He has also formed many positive relationships through the team, including high-level executives, pro and local riders and racing teams.

Kelly started his successful 2010 season by dethroning the mountain biking icon, Travis Brown, at the very popular Gunnison Growler. He continued posting strong results throughout the season, including two top-10 finishes at Mountain States Cup races. During his final training leading up to the 24 Hour National Championships in Moab, he handled the Crested Butte 100 by taking the win by over four minutes. Moab was the last test of 2010. With redemption on his mind from his 2nd place finish in 2009, Kelly gave it everything he had in preparation, training, and racing for the National Championship.

I sat down with Kelly to discuss Moab, racing, career, and life. He was very engaging, informative, and eager to discuss many topics on and off the bike.

[303Cycling] Tell us a little about Kelly.
Originally from North Dakota, Kelly has very supportive parents, a brother, stepbrother, and half-sister. Although he is fond of his roots in the upper Midwest, it didn’t take long for him to move out and away after high school, moving to Colorado at 18. He admits that he was never very athletic, “I never really rode a bike and wasn’t athletic during high school. I ran cross country in middle school. I just worked and was really into cars.” Kelly doesn’t own any collector cars currently, but he reminisces about his early roots in racing. When he was 15 or 16, Kelly started racing stock cars at the local dirt track oval.

Race Report
Just another race at the Boulder Reservoir? Hardly. Recess at the Rez had a little of everything. The course was very different from last weekends Colorado Cross Classic but very interesting with lots of sand, off camber grass turns and some natural obstacles. The race also offered 3 different warm-up options and the ACA was very clear about when the course was open for warm-up. Oh yeah there was also Sumo Porker, a book drive and lots of prizes for racers. The weather wasn't real cyclocross weather but this is Colorado so 70+ degrees in November is really not all that strange.

AMERICAN CYCLING ASSOCIATION (ACA) 2011 Proposed Rule Changes

News Item:

We were just made aware of the following potential rule change for 2011. I personally enjoy racing cyclocross in Colorado in September. I dont know if we need to start the weekend after Labor Day but I love racing cyclocross in warm weather or cold weather. The ACA did make changes this year with the Colorado Cross Cup and part of the rules were there would be no Cross Cup races in September. My feeling is if you dont want to race in September, dont and you can still be competitive in the Cross Cup series.

Item 9. Permit Fees – Cyclocross Permits
Add Racing Rule 5.4.10

Cyclocross events shall not be permitted before the first of October.

Submitted by: Lee Waldman - GMSV
Pro:

  • There is no consistency between our cyclocross calendar and the rest of the world.
  • If we want to prepare our riders to be competitive on the national and world stage we need to adjust our calendar to help them.
  • The weather in Colorado in September is much too hot to have safe racing. We had people being treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration at our race (GMSV) on Sept. 19.

Nicole Duke - Interview

Nicole Duke - 2010 Aspen Lodge

Cyclocross season is in full swing in Colorado and one person is having a break out year: Nicole Duke, married and working mother of two. She has won a number of local ACA cyclocross events, took two 7ths at the USGP in Louisville KY and two 3rds at last weekend's Colorado Cross Classic and the Boulder Cup. We caught up with Nicole to ask her a few questions.

[303Cycling] Lets learn a little bit about Nicole Duke. Can you give us a little background and tell us when you started competing in cyclocross?
[Nicole] I grew up in Florida riding dirt bikes, surfing, and playing soccer.  I went pro in downhill and dual slalom mountain biking in 1996 and raced until 2000, traveling the nation and the world.  I was consistently top 5 in slalom and top 10 in downhill.  I rode for factory teams like Giant, Mongoose, and Intense.

After that, I pursued a career as a hairstylist. Art and fashion are a passion of mine.  In 2004, I met my husband Ben Duke we married and had two children, Ryder 5, Canin 2.  It was 2007 when I tried my first cross race. I was on a mountain bike and got 3rd in the women’s open class.  I continued the rest of the season on a cross bike and was hooked.

I wasn’t able to race the 2008 season after the birth of my daughter, Canin.  2009 was to be my follow up but I didn’t train thinking I wasn't actually going to race.  I didn't have a bike, but my husband surprised me the week before the first race.  That season earned me a third place at States and third in my age group at Nationals.

So, 2010 is my third season competing in cross.

[303Cycling] Is Nationals a goal again this year?
[Nicole] Nationals is a big goal for me this year.  I am hoping for the champion spot for my age group and a top 10 in the elite.  Last year I raced elite but didn’t have points so started on the back row and had to pass 60 some women just to end up 28th.  This year I’m trying to get some points so that I have a better chance.

Thank You Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance

Below is a "Letter to the Editor" in today's Daily Camera, the summary of it is that Mountain Bikers have too much control of the existing open space trails and that is why 1B was so close in the elections... And this is why we should take a moment to thank Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance! They deserve a credit for having 84% of our open space trails open to cyclist, for helping the city get what will be the Worlds best Bike Park. For hosting great events like great cycling movies at the Boulder Theater and continuing to get more trails built like the recently opened Mayhoffer Singletree Trail trail. And lastly, they did lobby strongly to get 1B passed so even if you don't have a mountain bike (although many of the trails can be ridden on about any type of bike) lets say Thank You BMA!

Now who has the back of all the road cyclist in Boulder County? Bicycle Colorado does a little but they must cover the entire state's needs so while a great organization they cannot dedicate all their resources like BMA can.
