CX attracts cycling gear geeks and if you have the disposable income, you can have a hayday. Doesnt mean that is what it takes to participate. A good, solid CX bike will come in way below an average road racing machine. Plus, there's all the $$ you can save on shaving cream and razors in CX.
I race in the single speed category kind of for that reason... basic gear, 1 bike, 1 wheel set (and the wheels are basic). IMO if you want to do well the cost is more time than equipment, time on the bike.
who really cares if "fat/slow guys showing up with 2 carbon bikes and 4 sets of wheels." ? It's their money and time - if that is how they want to spend it, then so be it. Why tear down others that are having a good time?
Somebody once said, it's not about the bike. Take a look @ G Thacker's or B Bieterman's bikes (2 very fast old guys who have medaled at nationals over the past few years), nothing fancy at all. Doesn't seem to slow them down. Yeah, it seems silly for a fatty master to show up with two bikes and 3 or 4 sets of wheels, but so what. If someone has the money and 'cross is their passion, I say go for it
Cat 4 men needs to be moved up to 3 faster. 2 or 3 podiums and their asses should be booted up.
We need more beer laps at cx races, and for gosh sakes race the ladies at closer start times. We really like to socialize with each other, it keeps us interested.

I do not think road racing is

I do not think road racing is any more or less serrious than say tri. Running is more laid back.
Now cross is getting out of hand, with the call up points, and fat/slow guys showing up with 2 carbon bikes and 4 sets of wheels.

I'd say that CX and Mtn are still pretty inviting to newbies.
Road and track are a bit on the too serious side. There are a few exceptions with some of the road events though.
