Paths vs Roads: Guest Opinion in the Daily Camera
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
The Daily Camera Online has a regular feature under the opinion section called their Virtual Editorial Board in which they regularly post a question, and solicit answers. They recently posted a question regarding how traffic is changing in Boulder.
An interesting post by a friend of mine showed up yesterday. It talks about cycling in Boulder on the roads versus the multi-use path system. He also talks about our duties as cyclists when we do find our cycling selves on the path system. His username is ductmonkey, and his is the fourth comment.
Which would you prefer? Roads or paths?
If your answer is "both", how much do you use each?

Prefer Roads

Roads are a much better place for the cyclist who trains for competition. I suppose if you are just getting around the bike paths would be fine. For me I'm on the bike for a workout and training to compete, I don't think this belongs on bike paths.

I think that your friend is naive and narcisstic. I also think that this statement is completely false.
"The only car-bike collision that a cyclist has no control over is getting struck from behind, but that represents less than 2% of all such accidents. You will get hit with a right hook or a left hook or by a car coming out of a side street 50 times before you ever get struck from behind. Knowing that those three situations are the true hazards of the road is a good place to start."

I like both...

It really depends on my reason for riding my bike and my state of mind. Roads are usually the fastest way around but riding the path, at times, feels very safe and is fun for a slow ride. Great way to end a hard training ride is to finish it on a path.
