Lefthand Canyon Improvements start to roll out

The DailyCamera reports on the new signage that is being installed in the canyon, a total of 40 new signs were added some of those being the "Single file at Curves". These improvements are part of a campaign to reduce car vs. cyclist tensions in some of the mountain canyon roads.     From the County Boulder County introduces 'Road Code' signage in canyons

    Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Transportation Department has installed new “Road Code” signage along the roads of Left Hand Canyon, James Canyon and Lee Hill Drive in order to improve safety and reduce tensions between cyclists and motorists.

    The signs encourage cyclists to ride single file through curvy stretches of road, guide cyclists to newly-constructed waiting areas where they can congregate away from traffic, and advise motorists to pass cyclists with care.

    “The need for the Road Code was identified through a collaborative process among residents and bicyclists resulting in signage that will hopefully make the canyon experience safer and more enjoyable for all users,” Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle said. “These roads have become very popular among cyclists and we wanted to create signage that would speak to them – not just to motorists – and become a part of their canyon experience.”

    “These signs provide a public service to a true mix of county residents – both cyclists and motorists – and are an example of how collaboration can create thoughtful changes,” Boulder County Commissioner Will Toor said. “We laud the work of concerned residents and staff for coming up with concrete solutions that we’ve been able to implement.”

    The code is just one of several improvements implemented by Boulder County Transportation this spring in response to recommendations made by a group of local cyclists and canyon residents and the results of a survey of canyon users.

    Improvements initiated to date include:
    • Sweepers contracted to clean road shoulders more frequently
    • Construction and paving of pullouts where cyclists can congregate to prevent gathering in road
    • Road maintenance staff assigned to regularly patrol canyon roads and remove debris from shoulders
    • Construction of wider shoulders on westbound Lee Hill Drive from the Boulder city limits to Olde Stage Road
    Additionally, a county bicycle map has been developed that provides information on shoulder widths, traffic levels, steepness, pullouts, and other important information so cyclists can be more aware of the conditions they may encounter on different roads, and can choose the most appropriate route for their ride. Free copies of the new map are available at bike shops throughout the county. An online version is also available.

    To increase safety for motorists and cyclists in the canyons, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has collaborated with Transportation staff on outreach and education with the local cycling community. The Sheriff's Office continues to work with canyon residents, cyclists and motorists on how to make the roads a more enjoyable and cooperative place to live, drive and cycle.

    The improvements and outreach efforts are based on the recommendations of the Boulder County Mountain Canyon-Cyclist-Motorist Working Group. The group, organized in the fall of 2009 by the county’s Transportation Department and Sheriff’s Office, collaborated to develop practical ideas for making mountain roads safer and to increase cooperation among users.

I rode up to Jamestown on

I rode up to Jamestown on Monday night and saw the new signs. They confused me a bit. I thought cyclists were fine to ride two abreast, as long as we are to the right side of the white line. Highway 36 is a good example, with a wide shoulder where we can ride 2 abreast, right of the white line the whole way to Lyons.

What confused me is the shoulder is basically the same width the entire way up to Jamestown. So if we are to the rght of the white line in a curve, why does the sign say we need to go single?

I ride 250-300 a week around the county. The consistent problem I see is that the two abreast riders have one dude on the white line, and that is not the deal. The outside rider is 1/3 into the road where would probably ride alone. Wrong-o.
