Longmont Times - Bicycles needed for holiday program

LONGMONT — Got a spare bike taking up space in the garage? Why not donate it for a good cause?

The Ed & Ruth Lehman YMCA needs used and new bikes to give away to low-income families at its annual holiday bike distribution.

Children’s bikes — those with 12-, 16-, 20- or 24-inch wheels — are particularly needed.

“We’ve got more 10-speeds and more three-speeds than we can possibly use,” said Buzz Feldman, the program’s coordinator for more than 20 years.

Feldman said the drive has collected about 300 bikes so far. Last year, volunteers gave out 377 bikes and 350 helmets.

Bikes can be dropped off through Nov. 28 at any Longmont fire station. Tricycles, push scooters and mountain bikes also will be accepted.

Volunteers also are needed to clean and repair the donated bikes. Contact Feldman at 303-709-6991 to volunteer.

Community Cycles of Boulder's Holiday Bike Giveaway
The Kids’ Holiday Bike Giveaway is simple- all year Community Cycles takes in donated kids ’ bikes and puts them in a storage space. Starting in early December, we host “work nights” and volunteer mechanics work to get the kids’ bikes ride ready. When the day comes, we move the bikes over to Indoor Cycling. Meanwhile, we have been reaching out to the community in December to let needy families know that they can come get a free bike for their kids for the holidays.

December 19th
Boulder Indoor Cycling
3550 Frontier Avenue
9a.m. – 1p.m.

Once the big day comes and the bikes are all ready to go, families line up at the door and get a number. There is a waiting area where refreshments are provided, and when their number is called, families come and select their bike(s). Kids do a test ride and get a final safety check on the bike and are ready to go!
