The University of Colorado Cycling team executed a clean sweep of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate
Conference Championships in Durango this weekend.
Learn how the CU Triathlete Team also did very well at Nationals last weekend by winning overall team title
The 2005 National champions showed an encouraging return to form, and the team is now confident
going into the National Championships held in Ogden, UT from the 2nd to 6th May.
CU Cycling brought a 35 strong team to battle Fort Lewis College on their own turf, and it paid off.
Josh Yeaton, a senior from Anchorage Alaska, showed his form with back to back wins in the Criterium and Road Race.
A decisive hill close to the end of the road race proved enough to split the pack in the strong Men’s A field. Yeaton took full advantage and moved away from the bunch with Fort Lewis rider and Mountain Bike National Champion Rotem Ishay on the last lap, and easily crossed the line alone for the win. Josh will head the six-strong men’s team in Ogden next weekend.
The women’s team showed equal domination over the SkyHawks. The girls set off a minute behind Fort Lewis in the Team Time Trial and passed them on the road. Heather Fischer, Abby Mickey, Christa Ghent and Claire Bensard have been practicing their time trial skills twice a week all semester under the guidance of experienced Women’s coach Margell Abel. This team will be hot favorites going into Nationals.
The women’s mass-start races were equally dominated by the Buffalos. Heather Fischer, a Senior in International Affairs, battled with Sarah Sturm of Fort Lewis in both races, but edged her out on the hills of Durango to take double Gold. Heather, a climbing specialist, will be a marked rider on the start line of the hilly Ogden course.
Head coach Frank Overton, of Fastcat coaching, now has the unenviable job of selecting which riders
will make the cut and a prized spot on the strongest team in years.
