Seriously, Rick??? You think that just because someone hosted a crit on a Saturday afternoon in old town Littleton, they're going to construct 10 miles of bike shoulders and new trails next year?

Newsflash: bicycle racing has almost NO impact on bicycle infrastructure improvements. The racing community is not the driving force on bicycle-related change.

Lets take a different look, what do you think would happen in Boulder if all trails were closed to bike and all bike shoulders removed along with racing and group rides prohibited. In 10 years you would see an exit of citizens to places more accommodating to their values and interests.

This year Littleton has a bike race, next year they add 10 miles of bike shoulders and 2 new trails, then the following year 2 races and 15 miles of bike shoulders and 30 new bike parking spaces. In 10 years you might have a community that is very desirable place to live.

Could you provide a rebuttal to any of the points Roadie made?

Are you one of those cyclists who thinks we actually provide ROI for sponsors or that we bring an economic benefit to a community like Littleton by gracing them with a crit on a Saturday afternoon? Have you not noticed that for all but the biggest, best promoted races we have, the only spectators are either family/significant others/other racers?

We don't draw a crowd and those of us who are there aren't spending money with the local merchants, except maybe at a diner or coffee shop, while we're there.

Perhaps there was a grumpy merchant, but it seems there are always plenty of grumpy-butt racers to go around. When we get an awesome venue like Littleton, we should cherish it, put on a good show, and thank everybody (spectators for coming out, marshals/police for helping the race run, local residents for tolerating us) when we're done. Save the gripes for the race surveys... Those are a more effective form of feedback to the Promoters IMHO.

If John isn't doing any business, there's more to it than a bike race in his town. First of all, I'm curious as to how many people who would be "foot traffic" in downtown Littleton on a Saturday afternoon are going to just pop in a buy a flag from him? He advertises on local AM radio some, but he's nearly impossible to find out about online.

I'm guessing John's just a grumpy ol' fart who doesn't want anyone doing anything fun.

Couple of quick comments to hopefully clear up some misconceptions regarding our race. We spend a significant amount of time and effort during the year working with the City and the Merchants' Association - bringing in new visitors and revenue to the local merchants is a key goal for the race. The City is a huge supporter of the race and its value to their brand and Colorado cycling. There are a number of exciting things in the works that will be announced over the next couple of weeks that will benefit the merchants and cycling in Colorado. In the interim start eating your carrots :)
