Remembering the fatal accident at Hwy 36 and Broadway

It's been a little over a year since the fatal bike accident at the intersection of Hwy 36 and Broadway and now thanks to the economic stimulus from the Federal Government things are starting to change.

The scope of the project includes some minor changes to the intersection configuration and installation of the new signal. The intent of the project is to improve operations and safety of it. ARRA (federal stimulus) funds are used to fund this work. Total cost of the project is approximately $350,000.

Months prior to this new construction the lanes were reconfigured to help with cars and cyclist crossing north bound onto Hwy 36 but still confusion was there.

Traffic lights suck! They

Traffic lights suck! They should put in a large round-about instead (ever been to Europe?).

Putting traffic lights in increases pollution, traffic congestion and drive times and, on highway-like roads such as Hwy 36, sudden decreases in traffic can be dangerous. Not to mention, they carry a huge installation cost.

Large round-abouts are the way to go (watch any Tour de France coverage to see what i'm talking about).

But don't worry, this is the U.S. of A. Chance are, you're unlikely to see modern, intelligent traffic engineering anytime soon. We're sure to see plenty more installations of traffic lights.

Do you use brakes?

Do they suck because you don't like to stop? Don't worry, you won't be alone, plenty of large packs will I'm sure blow right thru that new intersection like no light was ever there. I hope no one wastes a ghost bike on you.
