30,000 spectator cap proposed for Flagstaff's Stage 6 finish

News Item:

How will cycling crazed fans of Boulder and Colorado be tamed on Stage 6 in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge? One of the methods proposed will be to limit the number of spectators on Flagstaff mountain. Officials are probably looking to prevent the chaos that apparently happened on Lookout Mountain's segment of last year's USA Pro Challenge. Wonder how much these free wristbands will sell for on the internet once someone gets their hands on them?

From the Daily Camera

The Boulder City Council on Tuesday will consider a recommendation by the city's Open Space Board of Trustees to limit the number of spectators on Flagstaff Mountain to 30,000. Under the plan, free wristbands would be distributed in advance of the Aug. 25 stage, with a maximum of five given out to any one person.

Fourmile Connector trail to Betasso set to open July 12th

News Item:

This Thursday at 3pm Boulder County officials will open the LONG awaited Fourmile connector to the Betasso trail system. This new trail will allow cyclist to avoid either the tunnel or the canyon link trail if they want to ride to Betasso. Many have hated the existing two options because the tunnel for many is just damn scary if you don't have a tail light and the link trail can be a pain if you don't have good legs or lungs and sometimes have to watch for the occasional bombing downhiller yelling "Straaaavvvvaaaa".

From Boulder County Website

The Boulder County Commissioners and Parks and Open Space department staff are hosting the grand opening of the .8-mile Fourmile Link Trail connecting Benjamin Loop with Fourmile Canyon Drive at Betasso Preserve on Thursday, July 12, at 3 p.m. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the bridge over Fourmile Creek.

Boulder Safe Street's new Heads Up Safety Campaign

News Item:

Born out of the recent Boulder Safe Streets Report that came out this past Febuary, a campaign to help improve safety at crosswalks is moving forward. According to the study 39% of all bike/auto accidents happen at crosswalks.

From pg 5 of the Safety Report

The new Heads Up, Mind the Crosswalk Campaign is to educate users of how these crosswalks work because by far the majority of the communities we grew up in crosswalks were non-existent or just white paint on pavement.

Boulder Peak 5150 Triathlon finds a window between rain storms. Boulderites Cam Dye and Laura Bennett claim titles.

News Item:

From 303triathlon

The 2012 Boulder Peak Triathlon was all about the bike. Boulder native Cam Dye very nearly claimed the bike course record on his way to winning the notoriously challenging Boulder Peak 5150 Triathlon. In the end 4 time XTERRA World Champion, Conrad Stoltz, edged Dye by just 6 seconds to claim the bike record on his way to an eventual 5th place. That's an effort, according to Stoltz, of close to 400 watts average for the 42k hilly course. We have to imagine Dye was producing something very close to those numbers, although he is a bit lighter than "The Caveman" Stoltz. Either way both produced bike splits more than three minutes faster than the third split of Matty Reed (1:01:20). The only reason Stoltz was not second was due to a minute stand down penalty due to riding past the dismount line into T2.
