Will Flagstaff Finish live up to its Expectation?

News Item:

How influential will Flag Finish have

So how influential will this finish be to the race? Do you believe the winner will really be crowned on Saturday with Sunday remaining as a victory lap around Denver? Take our poll on how the finish impact the overall results of the race.

Tom Danielson weighs in on the selection of Flagstaff finish in Stage 6

Flagstaff hill climb is arguably one of the best climbs that really show cases beauty and athleticism of the bike loving town of Boulder. Denver can piggy back off of Golden's Lookout Mtn Climb which was on the route of the USPCC last year and a place where some of the craziest fans where. As Boulder was left out of the tour last year the induction of Flagstaff to the route this year might make Lookout's stage seem like a lame party. But Boulder has had to fight for it, fans are required to get wristbands if they want to be on Flagstaff, this is in effort to prevent too many from flocking to the hills. Boulder has also had to push back on Open Space "museum" packers and try to have stage finish moved or legally challenged. USAToday picked up the legal battle

But in May, a group of activists led by former town coucilman Steve Pomerance challenged the plan. Pomerance, who said he has ridden his bicycle up Flagstaff hundreds of times, reminded the council that the final mile-long segment of road to the amphitheater technically was on open space. According to Boulder's town charter, which was written in the mid-1980s, only non-competitive activities such as hiking and biking are allowed on the protected land.

Attention Boulder Cyclist - Niwot Road under construction

News Item:

From Boulder County Transportation email

Boulder County will be removing the pavement for a one-mile stretch of Niwot Road west of 55th at the end of next week as phase one of the Neva /Niwot Road reconstruction project. From that point forward, one part of anther of Neva and Niwot Roads between Foothills Highway and North 63rd Street will be likely be gravel through early November.

Also, Neva Road is scheduled to be closed from 39th Street to Fairways Drive the week of September 10th. No traffic, including bicycles will be allowed through the closure during daytime hours (8:30 AM to 4:00 PM). The road will be open evenings and weekdays however, construction conditions will exist.

Once complete, the entire stretch of Neva / Niwot will be repaved at full width including 4-foot shoulders. Our goal is to have the project done by the end of the year, but it is very likely that weather will delay at least part of the project until early spring 2013.

Boulder County is sending out regular construction updates on the project. Anyone interested in receiving them should contact the Transportation Department at the email below.

Please use caution when riding and remember, "Courtesy is Contagious"!!!!

Venus de Miles: It’s Not Just for Women with Road Bikes Anymore.

Listen to Dream Team Rider, Heather Irmiger
and Leah Goldstein, talk about their role
in Venus de Miles

You’ve probably never seen me on a road bike. That’s because I’ve never ridden one. Unless you count my sweet 10-speed bike I had way back when. When I wore monogrammed sweaters and had a bi-level haircut and I thought Shaun Cassidy was cool. That’s why it might surprise you that I’ve decided to ride in the Venus de Miles. Yep. You read that right. I was thinking about riding my pink mountain bike and I know you can ride anything you want but I figure we might as well make this an experience to really remember by putting myself on a bike with very skinny tires. And so I called my buddy at the Trek store here in Boulder. And thanks to Chris and Trek, I will be straddling something with very skinny tires (compared to my mountain bike) and a gearing system I’m sure will be way over my head.

This will be the 5th year for the Venus de Miles and it seems to get bigger and quite possibly better every year. It is not a race and so if you’re thinking to yourself, “I’m not as fast as Cheri” or “I’m not in as good of shape as Cheri” then you can stop right there. Oh. You weren’t thinking that at all? Awkward! But seriously, this ride is about raising money for the Greenhouse Scholars. And the Greenhouse Scholars provides financial, practical and personal support to high achieving under resourced people. Bottom line=It helps people fulfill their educational goals. To date, over $379,000 has been raised! This is an easy way to make a difference and support people who want to get an education and have fun! Win. Win. Win.

There are four options for ride length; 100, 67, 51 and 33 miles. And my favorite part? If you wake up and you’re not feeling the 57 mile ride you signed up for you can change your mind! You can ride the 33 mile route. Lately I’ve been seeing some cyclists around town with a pacer person on a scooter. I think the scooter person carries refreshments and yells at the cyclists for encouragement. I also think I want one of these people. But the closest thing I will come to a scooter person is my Eurovan with my husband and three kids. I can see it now. My kids would be yelling out the window at me, “Are we there yet?” and “What are you making for dinner?” Somehow I think the cyclists with the people on the scooters are having a totally different experience. I knew I shouldn’t have sold my scooter.

Painting Pinkies at USA Pro Cycling Challenge to support Boulder Fire Fighters

News Item:

Team ten20, one of Colorado's largest women's cycle team, will be painting pinkies pink at the US Pro Cycling Challenge stage 6 to raise money for Boulder firefighters

As a team we look to be inspiring and impactful, and at the US Pro Cycling Challenge, coming to Colorado later this month, Team ten20 is set to descend upon the crowd watching the pro racers as they come through stage 6 in Boulder and Paint Pink Pinkies for Boulder Rural Fire Department.

Through this grass roots effort, our goal is to raise money for the brave men and women fire fighters of our very own Boulder Rural Fire Department who have been out this summer (and numerous other times) fighting the Colorado wild fires.

We though no better connection between our cycling team and the grand audience out to watch the USPCC then to canvas the crowd in our racing kits (pink/orange jerseys, knee socks, shorts & skirts), pink nail polish in hand, to ask who will have their pinkies painted pink for a $1 (each nail - though no limit to the donation - perhaps all ten fingers for $10.20) - all donated funds will go directly into fire fighter boots and to the BRFD!

In addition to being out in the crowd along the race course - ten20 spa will host a pinky bar and lounge all day Saturday, August 25th from 11 am - 6pm. Come cool off in the spa, have your pinky painted pink and enjoy a cold beverage and treats from our sponsors.

ten20 is located on the NE corner of Pearl + 20th Street, at the east end of the USPCC Finish Festival.

Preventing Bicycle Fatalities at US-36 and Violet

News Item:

Partial repost with permission from Flatironbike.com. Please go there to read the full article

Two bicyclists have been killed at the intersection of US-36 and Violet Avenue since 2009. The most recent was TJ Doherty, on July 24th, 2012. Both cyclists were headed southeast on US-36, and were hit by cars traveling northwest, making left turns onto Violet. In this area US-36 is just outside of Boulder’s city limits, in the county, but it’s the Colorado Dept. of Transportation (CDOT) that’s responsible for it. Looking at the aerial view below we can explore why this intersection might be particularly dangerous for cyclists.

Northwest bound vehicles on US-36 have a dedicated left turn lane, and no obligation to stop before making their turn. The angle that Violet Ave. makes with the highway is quite oblique, meaning that it can be taken at high speed, and because US-36 has a speed limit of 55 mph in this area, cars often will take it at high speed if they don’t see any oncoming traffic.
