"For those areas that we counted, those roads that we put shoulders on to increase the safety for cars and bikers really seemed to have quite a bit more bike riders than those that didn't," said George Gerstle, director of Boulder County's Transportation Department.
Volunteers counted 1,870 bikes last September at 17 locations over a weekday and a weekend day for two hours at a time. And while the results have given Transportation Department staffers some more insight to bike use in the county, the data may prove to be more useful over time.
