We’ve all met a guide. You know one when you meet one. It’s someone who looks out for the group, puts others before themselves and somehow manages to both push you and hold a space for everyone else in the group. I spoke to someone like that the other day; Emily Hightower. Emily is running the Wahine Mountain Bike Yoga Retreat. This retreat is the answer to what many of us are looking for; mountain biking, yoga, good food and a beautiful location to lay your head. If you’re like me, a spa weekend doesn’t quite fit my bill. I want to be active AND be pampered.

The Wahine retreat will offer a beautiful balance. You will be able to ride hard, rest well and nourish yourself both with daily yoga and yummy organic food. And nourish seems to be the ringtone for Emily. She wants women to feel challenged, get access to nature, feel good inside and out and gain strength from what they eat while they are pushing their bodies and exploring their limits. And after all that, you can soak in the hot springs on the property and relax and remember what it’s like to have nothing to do. Ahh…

Emily is bringing some amazing people in to help and sponsor the group; Ashley Rankin from Shredly will ride with the group and provide clothing for demo (and some to keep), Aloha Mountain Cyclery will be on hand for repairs, bike checks, and will have Rocky Mountain bikes for demo. Lacy Hughes will provide the fresh, local organic food. The retreat is in Carbondale and Avalanche Ranch will be your home for the weekend. Ride, recover and rejuvenate. That’s what I’m talking about.

I’ve done guided backpacking trips and adventure racing retreats. They are some of the precious times in my life. I met nice people, learned lots, pushed myself and did things I never thought I could (carry a 35 pound pack for days). And I did things I never want to do again (rappel 100 feet walls). And I lived to tell you all about it. I hope you can say the same someday.

So call your girlfriends. The ones you keep meaning to call and make a plan to get together. Plan a weekend where it’s all about you, your bike and getting your groove back. Just in case you’ve been missing it.
